Baylor Baseball defeats Sam Houston, 7-6, after Chaotic Ending in Midweek Matchup
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (9-12) extended its win streak to three games after defeating Sam Houston (13-8), 7-6, on a wild ending Tuesday evening at Baylor Ballpark.
After a rain delay that lasted just over an hour, freshman OF Caleb Bergman delivered a pinch-hit, go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the Bears' victory.
“[Bergman] is just a competitive kid who doesn’t try to do too much,” coach Mitch Thompson said after the game of the 5-foot-9, 165-pound freshman.
“Very unassuming body build. Little guy. But he’s a competitor. He’s a baseball player. He’s going to keep getting more and more opportunities because he comes through virtually every time we ask him to.”
The win also required some late-inning defensive heroics in the form of something you’ve probably never seen before, an 8-6-2-5 double play.
In the top of the ninth, junior RHP Cole Stasio allowed two consecutive runners to reach base and then surrendered a hit off of the top of the batter’s eye in center field.
Bergman, who had pinch-hit for junior Kobe Andrade the inning prior, relayed the throw to Kolby Branch (Fr.) at shortstop who then relayed the throw to Cortlan Castle (So.) who tagged out the tying run at the plate.
Castle then threw the ball to Hunter Teplanszky (So.) at third base, who tagged another SHSU runner out on the basepaths.
“I probably have seen one like that before but can’t remember it,” Thompson said after the game.
“Never that big! It’s funny. That ball is probably one foot from going out in center. But it didn’t. We hit the relay, we hit the cut-off man, we made a nice throw, and here we go. We didn’t quit then either. We were in pretty good shape, but kind of an amazing ending to that one.”
After the chaos, sophomore Gabe Craig entered in relief and got the final out to end the game.
Earlier in the contest, Teplanszky lined a go-ahead shot past a diving SHSU right fielder for an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh.
Later in the inning, Teplanszky scored on a wild pitch to give Baylor a 6-4 lead before a rain delay promptly postponed the game.
When play resumed a little over an hour later, Stasio entered in the eighth to close the game and immediately allowed a single. The following at-bat, Andrade dropped a deep fly ball at the warning track in center field. Sam Houston tied the game at six apiece.
Final: Baylor 7 - Sam Houston 6
