Quote highlights from opening week of practice

If you’ve been away the past three days with our video coverage of practice or you’re using broadband and the first video from Friday is still loading, here’s the weekend’s highlights in quotes.

Matt Rhule

On the team’s adjustments to the scheme changes
“I think our veterans have done a nice job. I’ve been pleased with them, they’re leading. The biggest thing I want to see from our older players is are they going to embrace the younger players or are they just gonna hang out by themselves.”

On Sam Tecklenburg’s willingness to move inside
“[He’s] one of the best football players on the team. I think he’s an NFL offensive lineman. So just really for his future beyond just helping us, for him to go play 6, 7, 8, 9 years in the NFL is to be a center or guard in the NFL.”

On the team’s depth
“At certain positions I love it. Certain positions I have a hard time sleeping at night. We’ll continue to build the depth but I think we have a lot of defensive depth. We have depth at wide receiver, developed some depth at running back.”

On finding hidden talent throughout camp and the season
“Every year I’ve been a head coach and even before that, there’s been a kid — even when I was in the NFL there was an undrafted free agent— every year there was a kid on the scout team and by the end of the year he started for us. So I’m a big believer in, I care as much about what the threes are doing as the ones are doing.”

On blocking out the outside noise and trusting the process with his staff
“My first year at Temple, we were 0-5 and I was afraid to answer my phone ‘cause I thought I was going to get fired every day. And the phone rang in my office and they said, ‘Hey, Dick Vermeil’s on the phone for you.’” Rhule recalled after the first summer practice. “Coach Vermeil said, ‘Man, I’m just going to give you one piece of advice. Don’t listen to anybody -- listen to your coaches. Trust yourself, do this your way. Do what you think is right. Don’t give into the media and all that.'”

Phil Snow

“You know what I’ve learned in this business is you’re only as good as your last practice; your last game. Anything you’ve done in the past doesn't mean anything.”

On being called the Yoda of the team
“I don’t even know who Yoda is. I’ve never watched that movie, so I had to ask my wife who that is.”

On being a defensive coordinator in the Big 12
“It’s an attitude. We came from the American Conference and if you look at that conference, most of the people running the offenses were in the Big 12. So we ran against it and we have an approach in how we address these offenses and how fast they go and what they do.”

On his past mentors in 41 years coaching
“Jim Criner. I don’t know if you know that name, he was the head coach at Boise State and Iowa State and in Europe. He’s still taking teams over to Europe. Jim was a great football coach and then Bruce Snyder, I worked for him for 14 years. Bruce was an outstanding teacher and coach. Some of things they did for us were [incredible]. One year he taught everybody to evaluate every position. To evaluate the quarterbacks, you know who he brought in to teach us how to evaluate a quarterback? Bill Walsh. So those are the type of things he did for us. What I’ve learned from the old coaches is they taught me how to coach so I try to do that with our young coaches and teach them how to be a professional.”

Jeff Nixon

On Rob Saulin and Will Jones’ adjustment to offensive line
“It was a rough first day for 'em. You're really starting from scratch. Rob, he’s a freshman so he wasn’t here in the spring and Will was on the other side of the ball but they’re making progress and we’re really excited about Saulin. He's gonna be a big kid and he’s really athletic. He’s smart and he’s really gonna help us at some point in his career.”

On JaMycal Hasty
“He’s still a work in progress. So he’s still getting a lot of reps, definitely our starting running back. I like where he’s at. I think he can be a big-time player.”

On plan for running backs
“You really like to have two guys carry the load and if we’re good enough, we’ll have three guys as Baylor has done in the past. So we’ll be running back by committee. I still definitely think JaMycal is our starter. If he’s healthy, he’s going to have a big year.”

On the QB competition
“We’re still a little bit away from naming a starter.”

JaMycal Hasty

On younger players behind him
“[There's] enthusiasm to learn the playbook, try to get up to speed, catch up to where me and Terence.”

On the biggest difference between last year and this year’s offense
“Probably a little more run-oriented.”

On what a successful season looks like for him
“If we won every game.”

Patrick Lawrence

On the biggest difference between last year and this year’s offense
“There’s more to learn, more reads. We’re identifying the MIKE every time- we have an I.D. every time. Really, just more studying.”

On learning under George DeLeone
“I love Coach DeLeone. I really feel he’s gonna get us ready for the next level and he stays on us constantly on and off the field, making sure we’re doing right, making sure we’re drinking enough water. So he covers the whole tree of what we need to be doing.

Clay Johnston

On the differences between Phil Bennett’s defense and Phil Snow’s defense
“I’m not too worried about all the differences. I love Snow, I love Bennett; they’re both great coaches. I mean, they treated you the same. They just put a lot of time constructing us into being great players on the field and off the field.”

On learning Snow’s encyclopedic playbook
“It’s pretty large and Coach Snow’s on top of us. We have meetings about three hours a day with him just trying to get it down. I’m just really enjoying it.”

On Snow’s familiarity with the Big 12’s offenses already
“That man is a guru. We call him a Yoda; he knows all. He's the Yoda of football.”

On players’ car keys being taken away for team bonding
“Honestly, I enjoy it. I think it’s a great rule by Coach Rhule and it’s just awesome, we’re building a lot of chemistry together in the dorms. They shuttle us in the morning…they take care of us.”

Mo Porter

On the difference blocking for the three quarterbacks
“Make sure they don’t get hit. No matter who’s playing quarterback, it can be me back there playing quarterback, if I stand back there, the o-line shouldn’t let anybody touch me.”

On being called an NFL-level lineman by Coach Rhule
“The difference for me is they gave me a chance and jumped in there and went with it. They put me out there. I never started a game in D-I football…I’m gonna embrace it and try my hardest and prove him right.”

On comparing this year’s schemes with last year’s system
“It’s the same thing- spread, power, run up, hit people in the mouths and it’s basically the same thing, just different techniques.”

On Coach DeLeone
“He’s a real cool dude. Once you first meet him, you’re like, ‘I don’t know…’ but you get to know him, he’s a real nice guy. He always wants us to be around him. He invited us to his house last week and invited us over for pizza with his wife and sat by the poolside with him. I like him a lot.

I had not considered this point and it gave me a boost in confidence

He's got (Coach Snow) a no fear , can do attitude. I think it will play well with our veterans and new players alike.

Snow quoting Dick Vermeil:

"Vermeil said, 'Man, I'm just going to give you one piece of advice. Don't listen to anybody -- listen to your coaches. Trust yourself, do this your way. Do what you think is right. Don't give into the media and all that.'"

I especially like that last quote. I think Coach Snow does too. Good advice.
