LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor baseball (9-17, 2-5) extended its losing streak to five games after getting blown out by Kansas (10-14, 1-3), 12-4, in the series opener Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.

Despite the offense reaching 12 hits, BU went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base. The Bears’ pitching staff combined to give up 16 hits and 12 runs.

Sophomore RHP Mason Marriott made the first Friday start of his career, replacing fifth-year senior Blake Helton, and struggled mightily for the second consecutive week.

Marriott pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs and eight hits on 73 pitches.

Junior RHP Brett Garcia entered in relief of Marriott and surrendered six earned runs, two walks and four hits without getting an out.

Kansas led 12-1 at the end of the fourth inning.

Baylor added runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to cut KU’s lead to 12-4.

Sophomore 1B John Ceccoli hit a solo shot in the sixth, his team-leading fourth home run of the season.

In the seventh, junior LF Hunter Simmons added an RBI single. And in the eighth, junior C Harrison Caley added an RBI single of his own.
