Baylor Baseball Swept by Kansas, Drops Series Finale 5–4
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor baseball (9-19, 2-7) fell to Kansas (12-14, 3-3), 5-4, in the series finale to complete the Jayhawk sweep Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
The sweep marks BU’s seventh straight loss and Kansas’ first Big 12 sweep since 2019.
The Bears led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and appeared primed to salvage the series.
But freshman LHP Ethan Calder surrendered the game-tying home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and junior RHP Hambleton Oliver allowed the go-ahead home run in the eighth.
Baylor’s offense picked up 10 hits on the afternoon but couldn’t tie the game in the ninth despite a leadoff single from junior RF Cole Tremain.
After being removed from the Friday starter role, fifth-year senior Blake Helton started on the mound Sunday for the Bears. In only three innings of work, Helton gave up five hits and two earned runs on 44 pitches. Helton’s ERA currently sits at 7.96.
Baylor took its first lead of the afternoon in the second inning when freshman DH Walker Polk and Tremain knocked in RBIs.
In the fifth, freshman SS Kolby Branch lined his fourth home run of the season down the left field line to give BU the lead, 3-2.
The Jayhawks responded by tying the game in the sixth, but a two-out RBI double from sophomore 3B Hunter Teplanszky gave the Bears back the lead in the seventh, 4-3.
