Breaking down the 2019 offers: Quarterbacks
With Baylor currently sitting at eighteen commitments from the class of 2018, it's time to take a look at the prospects Baylor has targeted in the 2019 class. While these players have two seasons of high school football ahead of them, things have already begun to heat up on the recruiting trail.
Baylor kicked off its search for a 2019 quarterback in Matt Rhule's very first month on the job when Grant Gunnell (St Pius X) received a Baylor offer on January 3, 2017.
As a true freshman in 2015, Gunnell (6-6, 205) threw for more than 400 yards and accounted for 7 touchdowns in his varsity debut. Offers began to pour in for the phenom in the Spring of 2016, and, by the time the Bears threw their hat into the ring, Gunnell held offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Florida State, and a host of other programs.
In June, Gunnell committed to Texas A&M. This commitment came on the heels of several trips to College Station over the course of a year and, for all intents and purposes, Gunnell's recruitment is over.
In February, the Bears offered Roschon Johnson (Port Neches-Groves), a 6-foot, 192-pound dual-threat quarterback who was named his district's MVP in his sophomore season.
Baylor offered a little more than one week after both the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners extended offers to Johnson. Over the course of the Spring, Johnson picked up offers from Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State, among other programs. In July, Johnson effectively ended his recruitment when he committed to the Longhorns.
With Baylor's first two quarterback targets committed to other programs, uncommitted prospects Grant Tisdale (Allen) and Chris Herron (Langham Creek) are the major points of focus for Matt Rhule and his coaching staff.
Baylor offered Tisdale (6-1, 204) on May 19th, and Tisdale showed up in Waco for Baylor's first camp of the summer on June 4th.
Tisdale is a dual-threat prospect at one of the state's top football programs. He holds offers from thirteen programs, including Ohio State, Oregon, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma State. He is rated the second-best prospect at his position for the class of 2019 and, currently, all crystal ball projections point to Ohio State as the landing spot for this talented Texas prospect.
Which brings us to Chris Herron, a 6-foot, 184-pound dual-threat prospect.
Herron showed up in Waco for Baylor's final June camp and immediately picked up an offer after a strong showing.
The Baylor offer is Herron's first (and, so far, only) from a Power Five program, with his only other offer being Bowling Green. Herron made a return trip to Waco on July 29th for Baylor's final big recruiting event before the 2017 season gets underway. Herron was one of a tiny group of 2019 prospects in attendance, and the visit provided him the opportunity to mingle with many of the commits from the 2018 class as well as spend more time with the coaching staff.
