Bats Lead Baylor Baseball past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 12-6

In two games back from injury, junior LF Hunter Simmons has combined to go 6-9 with three RBIs.

WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (16-30) ended its five-game losing streak with an explosive 12-6 defeat of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (20-24) Wednesday evening at Baylor Ballpark.

In the victory, BU’s offense hit for a season-high 18 base knocks. Eight of the nine Baylor starters picked up at least one hit, and seven Bears had multi-hit games. 

Sophomore 3B Hunter Teplanszky led the way, going 3-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Junior LF Hunter Simmons and junior 2B Cole Posey both had three-hit games.

Jared Matheson started his sixth game of the season for Baylor. The McLennan CC transfer went a season-long 4.1 innings pitched and struck out five, allowed six hits and just one earned run.

Veteran reliever Anderson Needham tossed 2.2 scoreless frames and struck out four out of the bullpen. For just the second time in 2023, BU’s pitching staff combined to issue less than two walks.

Sophomore C Cort Castle extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-3, three RBI performance.

Meanwhile, the Bears' offense added runs in each of the first, second, third and fourth innings. 

Sophomore C Cort Castle extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run triple off of the left field wall in the third. Castle’s batting average has now been raised to .318.

In the sixth, Castle picked up his second extra-base hit of the night with an RBI double down the left-field line.

Later in the frame, junior RF Cole Tremain launched a two-run homer over the left field wall to extend Baylor’s lead to 12-3. It was Tremain’s fourth home run of the season.

Two errors in the ninth from Baylor’s defense gifted the Islanders three runs, but sophomore righty Gabe Craig entered in relief to get the final out of the ballgame.

Baylor baseball (16-30) will take a week off for final exams before facing Grand Canyon (27-19) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
