Matheson Tosses Gem as Baylor Baseball defeats Tarleton, 4-2
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Baylor baseball (17-35) ended its five-game losing streak with a 4-2 defeat of Tarleton (24-25) Tuesday evening at Tarleton Baseball Complex.
In the final midweek game of the season, Jared Matheson carried the Bears to victory with seven shutout frames on the mound.
The junior righty struck out five, allowed just two hits and issued only two free passes.
Despite a rough start to the year, Matheson has closed out the season with three phenomenal outings and has allowed two earned runs in his last 16.1 innings pitched.
The McLennan CC transfer’s ERA has dropped to 3.89. He’s the only BU pitcher who has tossed at least 15 innings and has an ERA below 4.00.
Baylor got out to a quick start with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Junior LF Hunter Simmons picked up his 33rd RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly, and redshirt freshman RF Gavin Brzozowski followed by smoking a three-run homer over the right field wall, his fourth of the season.
This season, the Bears have been outscored in first innings, 51-to-27.
Baylor’s offense didn’t score another run for the rest of the game and had five hits over the last eight innings.
Veteran reliever Anderson Needham entered in the eighth for Matheson and let the three batters he faced all reach base before getting pulled in favor of junior RHP Hambleton Oliver.
Oliver mitigated the damage, but the Texans came away with two runs to cut BU’s lead to 4-2.
Oliver went back out for the ninth and closed out the game with a 1, 2, 3 frame for his fourth save.
