Baylor Baseball: Oliver, Muirhead, Garcia Enter Transfer Portal
Three more Baylor baseball players have entered their names into the transfer portal, according to D1Baseball’s transfer tracker.
The three players are RHP Hambleton Oliver (Jr.), RHP Adam Muirhead (Jr.) and RHP Brett Garcia (Jr.).
Oliver comes as a bit of a surprise. The fourth-year junior from Corpus Christi was Baylor’s most reliable arm out of the bullpen and featured a 4.31 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP this season. He tossed the fourth-most innings on the team (39.2) and struck out 37 batters.
Muirhead, after a promising sophomore campaign, struggled mightily with command in 2023. In 25.1 innings pitched, Muirhead walked 29 batters and surrendered 28 hits. He finished the season with a 7.46 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP.
Garcia, a junior from La Mirada, California, made 18 appearances on the mound and possessed a 7.71 ERA and 2.05 WHIP
The other players who have already entered the portal include LHP Cam Caley (Jr.), 1B/DH Casen Neumann (So.), SS JoJo Medellin (Fr.) and C/DH Walker Polk (Fr.).
Of the 37 players eligible to return for the 2024 season, it’s been noted that around a third of the roster would be finding a new home.
Also in 2024, college baseball rosters will be expanded to 40, and there is expected to be competition in the fall once again.
The 2023 recruiting class features 12 freshmen and seven JUCO transfers. It’s yet to be seen what coach Mitch Thompson and his staff will bring in via the portal this summer, but assistant coach Zach Dillon said they expect to add three-to-five “impact players.”
