Ryan Martinez, a rising third-year shortstop from San Francisco, has committed to Mitch Thompson and the Baylor baseball program via the transfer portal.

A native of Towson, Maryland, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound middle infielder will likely be a depth piece for the Bears next season.

San Francisco Athletics
Baylor has added four players in the transfer portal so far.

At San Francisco, Martinez redshirted his freshman season in 2022. This past spring, he started 31 games and hit .222 with a .282 slugging percentage and a .298 on-base percentage. Martinez was one of the better defensive shortstops in the WCC and held a .962 fielding percentage.

Martinez is the Bears' fourth addition from the portal this summer, joining Mason Greer (1B, Missouri State), Patrick Hail (RHP, Lamar) and Jack Little (INF, Wichita State) as the three others.

This move comes after it was revealed last week that sophomore infielder Austin Stracener would not return to Baylor next season.

Currently, the 2024 squad includes 23 returnees, 13 incoming freshmen, six incoming JUCO additions and four portal additions. Assistant coach Zach Dillon stated that the staff wants 47-50 players competing for 40 spots in the fall.

As for the players leaving Waco, BU lost 12 players to the portal on this go around. The key losses include RHP Will Rigney (Jr., Texas), RHP Hambleton Oliver (Jr., West Virginia) and SS Kolby Branch (Fr., Georgia).
