Miami Country Day 2024 Forward Kayla Nelms Commits to Baylor

Nicki Collen has a plan and the ability to play multiple positions and score from multiple levels of the game has lead to Kayla Nelms being the newest Bear. Nelms brings scoring from the three point line, to the face up game, and back to the basket against smaller players. Nelms has the ability to put the ball on the floor from the 3 or 4 and use her 6-1 frame banging down low. In EYBL, Nelms has won two state championship rings and was one of the top scorers in EYBL for the Miami Suns. She has an “old school” mentality to do the little things needed while having a pure shot from deep.

Nelms played on the same travel team as current Bear Kyla Abraham (WBB)‍ and is one of the reasons for the initial interest in the Bears as the two have a close friendship. Nelms chose Baylor over Wake Forest, Clemson, St. Johns, Auburn, and others.

Congrats Kayla! Welcome to Baylor. This is the first time we have heard of her until now so it came as a pleasant surprise. Top 50 recruit. She appears to be under the radar, Baylor was the top program to offer her. Surprised that local Miami team or UCF didn't offer her. Here is the list of the other offers:
St John's, Wake Forest, Clemson, Auburn,
Cincinnati, Delaware, East Carolina,
Florida Atlantic, Florida Intl, George Washington, North Florida, Southern Miss.

Majority of teams on this offer list were not that good and/or had losing seasons. Apparently Coach NC saw something special in Kayla and kept it in the quiet zone until she committed. Look forward to hearing more about her from Coach NC and our Baylor WBB press.

And that's the reason Nicki wanted her visit so quiet

Cinci is a horrible team, no comparison to Baylor. They finished dead last in their conference past 2-3 years. They have poor recruiting every year. But they hired new head coach. They'll probably finish dead last again in B12.
