What Are Your Expectations for Baylor in 2024?

November 30, 2023

The day that Baylor announced it was bringing back Dave Aranda I quickly wrote this post: Don’t Shift the Expectation Window.

To state it succinctly, my argument is this: Just because Baylor was terrible in 2023 doesn’t mean we should settle for marginal improvement in 2024; don’t shift your expectations because the floor was lowered last year.

2-3 wins, half-empty McLane, and Aranda fired before Halloween.

And then we can kick the can down the road for 3-4 more years. I will be dead by then.....ugh. The CAB days will never happen again. In fact, I believe NIL will be the demise of Baylor football.

With our new top flight OC the skies the limit. ((Sarcasm))

He has to go at least 6-6.

7-5 or 8-4. I think a .500 record or less gets Aranda fired.

Yep, chances of me being around when/if BU is ever successful again are very very slim. Honestly, watching Big12 games this year along with SEC/B1G, it felt like a major gap. Big12 wasn't all that interesting, I caught myself turning and staying on another channel. It was feeling like the Sun Belt or AAC, etc. I'm thinking it's going to get worse.

No real QB right now, Sawyer is marginal at very best. Dline and oline major issues.

3 wins max. Aranda isn't a good recruiter, how can he restock in 9 months. We will be lucky to win 3.

I hope better, but realistically I just don't see it.

He had two solid years to get us better and we got worse. He's fixing in one off season??? Don't think so.

Continued poor performance. No way to fix all the problems Dave has created. He took a solid, hampionship program and through terrible recruiting and terrible on field coaching and led us to the very bottom of the league. With this recruiting class we will be weaker than 23. Will see on NIL which has been a disaster under Dave. Face it talented Texad players are not unterested in playing for Dave. Been watching our program many years. Steele and Robets had nothing to work with. Dave started with everything. Could be a one win season ahead with very low attendance in our beautiful stadium.

Ya gotta believe…Perhaps too many of us are just sitting and waiting for the storm to pass, when, in reality, we need to learn to dance in the rain.

The year I was hired as the Brooks Hall Director, we were 0-9-1. The next year we won the SWC for the first time in 50 years. Coach kept telling the coaches and the team that if they would commit to believing they were going to be conference champs, it would happen.
They even wrote the book with the title "Believe."

With BU's luck, I think he goes 6-6. Not good games just six really ugly wins. I mean as bad as our conference was this year, it's easy to see how even a bad-mediocre team could pull off 6 wins. So with the 6 W season, CDA is retained and we stay a mid-to-bottom dweller for the following year or two as well.

Do what I did this year with my youngest... We watched recorded games from the CAB days.....best Saturday afternoons we've had in years watching football..

Or, I could take your title word "Believe" and do a little Michigan football word play game - How about we just . "Be Evil"

If he doesn't win at least 7, he should be gone.

Based on the fact that he has had 3 losing seasons out of 4, our trajectory has been downward, we are moving onto OC #3 for year 5, our DC #2 was abysmal this year yet is being retained ... my expectations are low.

If we don't go 9-3 or better, both Aranda and Rhodes should both be gone. Set your standards high.

3 oc games
6 conference games

Seems like a reasonable request.

If he wins 8 next year, we'll give him an extension on top of his extension.

If he wins 5, the talk will be about what a great improvement he made over last year.

If he wins 3, he's probably gone.....but if he wins two of the last three or four and beats a bowl team or two, he stays one more year.

Being complacent and allowing this train wreck to continue has probably cost us a shot at two good coaches: Fritz and Cignetti.

Is Mack Rhoades thought Aranda had to go 9-3 next year to save both of their asses, there is absolutely no way he would have retained Aranda.

How do you know Rhoades made the call and if he didn't how do you know the person making the call is t think something along those lines as well?

Pretty much this, unfortunately. I think I remember an interview with Linda from several weeks back where she said something about the 2022 season being "not what they hoped for, but still a successful season" or something like that. That makes me think that merely getting to a bowl game is the new standard.

Ultimately, the big money folks are driving this train. Aranda will get canned whenever they are willing to pony up the money for the buyout, whatever that is.

I expect a lot of sunshine pumping during the Spring and the August practice sessions and then 3 to 5 wins.

"the offense looks SO much more explosive. Sawyer Robertson reminds me so much of Bryce Petty before the 2014 season".

This is pretty much where I'm at. I could be convinced to keep the staff after a 6-6 season -- if there was legitimate progress made on both sides of the ball and reason to believe we could make a similar jump in 2025.

But I think 4-8 is more likely than 6-6 or 7-5. I hope they prove me wrong.

Looking at the schedule for next year, there are perhaps 2 games we will be favored in. Based on that, I think five wins is our ceiling unless we make some big splashes in the transfer portal and/or sawyer Robertson ends up looking like his older cousin

I keep trying to convince myself that it can't be any worse than this year. As long as Aranda and Mack are a package deal I'm willing to watch the train wreck

I wonder what the motivation is when Baylor hires a new OC, and then they try to bring back an average QB like Blake: They are supposedly going to implement this high powered new system, so neither Sawyers or Shapen are versed in it. So why not bring in a QB that is above average and who knows the new system to start. And maybe they will, but are they trying to bring back Shapen for one year as a back up??????

I just forsee a dismal season again with about the same results.

Robertson was an Air Raid quarterback both in high school and for his first two years of college at Mississippi State. This should be a seamless transition for him.

It's not sunshine to point out facts.

I've already said my expectations for next season aren't high. That doesn't mean we need to invent new reasons for pessimism.

Sawyer has way more experience in offenses like our new one than he did in Grimes'. That's a fact.
