Western Kentucky Safety Kendrick Simpkins Commits to Baylor

Western Kentucky safety transfer Kendrick Simpkins has committed to Baylor following an official visit over the weekend. He chose Baylor over offers Florida and Washington State among others.

BAYLOR TRANSFER PORTAL COMMITS

The 6-foot-0, 200-pound prospect had a breakout season as a junior for WKU in 2023 as he posted 52 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 8 quarterback hurries, a pass deflection and four forced fumbles. Simpkins earned Conference USA honors as he led the nation in sacks by a defensive back.

Simpkins is slated to play STAR, a position Baylor has been trying to replace each of the past two seasons following Jalen Pitre’s All American season in 2021.

According to PFF, Simpkins 90.7 pass rush grade was No. 5 nationally for safeties who played at least  300 snaps on the season. Of the 12 safeties to rush the passer at least 20% of their defensive snaps, Simpkins’ 90.7 pass rush grade was the only safety nationally to grade over 70.6.

Of his 771 snaps, Simpkins played 253 of those in a free safety alignment, 155 in the slot, 235 in the box, and 122 at the line of scrimmage.

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda took a hands on approach in Simpkins’ recruitment as he was heavily involved in securing his commitment along with defensive coordinator Matthew Powledge and cornerbacks coach Kevin Curtis.

Simpkins joins UNLV transfer safety Cameren Jenkins as the second defensive back the staff has taken out of the transfer portal and becomes the sixth transfer portal addition for the 2024 season.

I'm pumped about this one. This kid gives us a chance to have a playmaker at the star position for the first time since 2021.

It is the sixth.

QB Dequan Finn
WR Ashtyn Hawkins
OL Omar Aigbedion
OL Kurt Danneker
DB Cameron Jenkins
DB Kendrick Simpkins

I wonder if they were expecting his commitment to come in before Hawkins' and had this pre-written.

We had a good portal class last year by ranking. It didn't work out so well.

We won't know much about this group or its potential impact until we see these guys play. But it would seem we've done a decent job of addressing our most pressing needs so far.

Kendrick Simpkins, a standout safety, commits to Baylor after an impressive junior season at WKU. His stellar performance, including leading the nation in sacks by a defensive back, makes him a key addition for Baylor's STAR position, aiming to fill the void left by Jalen Pitre.

Simpkins' exceptional 90.7 pass rush grade, ranked No. 5 nationally, solidifies his impact as a versatile and dynamic player for the team also check players fortune

Still need a fast cover LB, a cornerback, a center and right tackle. Then some serious S&C, physical practices & tackling drills, and reps to mesh these guys together.

Would be interesting to see an update on how our competition is doing in the portal. We know they are kicking our ass in high school recruiting. Dave appears to be doing better in the portal but that was reported last year and didn't work out so well. We have many needs because of poor recruiting. Dave seems challenged in recruiting Texas guys even though we are located in the center of the richest recruiting area of the country. Not sure how we will be viewed going into this season but expecting near the bottom of the Big 12. We may surprise. What are the ideas of a successful season? Over/under 6 wins?
