Texas State Wide Receiver Ashtyn Hawkins Commits to Baylor

January 7, 2024

Texas State transfer wide receiver Ashtyn Hawkins has committed to Baylor following his official visit over the weekend. He becomes the first wide receiver addition for the Baylor staff out of the transfer portal and the fifth overall.

 BAYLOR TRANSFER PORTAL COMMITS

Over the past two seasons the dynamic slot wide receiver has posted 1,461 yards and 10 touchdowns on 111 receptions. He was an All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention each of the past two seasons. For his career he has 141 catches for 1,745 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The electric prospect has seven 100-yard receiving games over the last two seasons including a school record 13 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown against Baylor in 2022.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect went to high school at DeSoto before attending Cisco College for two years with one of those seasons being canceled due to COVID. In his seven games played at Cisco College he totaled 482 yards and seven touchdowns on 25 receptions.

Baylor offensive coordinator Jake Spavital recruited him to Texas State as part of the Bobcats’ 2021 recruiting class and helped guide him to a prolific 2022 season.

With the switch to the new spread, up-tempo scheme under new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, the wide receiver position has become a focal point in the transfer portal. Hawkins gives the staff a proven commodity production wise but also familiarity with the new scheme that is coming to Waco for the 2024 season.

The staff has to bolstered the offensive side of the ball with the additions of Toledo QB Dequan Finn, Ohio OL Kurt Danneker, and Montana State OL Omar Aigbedion to go along with the latest addition of Hawkins.

I'm very much in wait-and-see mode. But I like what Aranda has done with both the staff and roster so far.

I like the progress and staff hires too BUT we need to add size on the DL and an athlete at LB …would be good to add a 5th year, P5 OT, DT and ILB through portal before spring

We did this through the JUCO ranks with Tonga Lolohea (6-5, 310) at nose and Keaton Thomas (JUCO all-American) at linebacker. Hopefully both will be instant impact guys for us.

I'm with you, though. I'd like to continue adding competition on the defensive side of the ball through the portal. But if we can get the Western Kentucky safety for our star position, we'll have at least added rotation-caliber talent at all levels through transfers.

It would be nice if we could get some players from the SEC, BIG 10 or PAC12 ect...that are looking for immediate playing time instead of these Mid Majors school that are a reach for even playing time must less immediate contributions that are No better that what is already on campus. I'm very disappointed in our approach to the NIL.

I couldn't disagree more. The only P4 guys we'd attract are backups or bit players looking for more playing time. Those who are already starters either stay where they are or trade up to blue blood programs for more NIL money and a better chance at a championship.

I'd much rather have high-production players from lower levels than P4 benchwarmers, especially in our current state. We need guys who can come in and make us better immediately, not talented but inexperienced kids who will arrive with massive learning curves themselves.

I'm not going to single anyone out, but we've already seen this play out on our own roster on several occasions. Give me small school and JUCO standouts over P4 wallflowers.

I think most of us are in this place. But if we have to keep Aranda and Co., it's good that they're trying address some of our biggest weaknesses from this past season.

Ultimately, it will come down to wins and losses next fall. Nothing else matters. But it's January. All we can do is discuss the offseason moves we are making or wish we would make.

I like finding the stars at non-P5 schools (especially players who have performed well against P5 teams). Hawkins is one of those players. I've seen him 3 times now and he is legit. Scott Drew has mastered that recruiting tactic in basketball.

Hawkins ate us up two years ago, set the Texas State single-game receptions record with 13 catches if I'm not mistaken.

And he comes from a winning high school program in DeSoto. That place produces dogs. We've had several ourselves.

Amen. Too many people pay more attention to what school or conference a player comes from versus what talents the athlete brings. There are numerous reasons why you find guys at lower division schools or JUCO that are really P5 talent, good P5 talent. And why many of these P5 transfers ought to be playing at a G5 level.

Glad ignoring these students didn't cross the mind of our basketball coaches because of where they played. Drew has taken several from G5 schools that have been high impact players for us. Guess he shouldn't have taken Flagler since he came from Presbyterian. Collen is doing the same thing. Bill Snyder built most of his program through JUCOs before the portal even existed. Just looking at where the player is coming from is a lousy way to build a roster.

Bring on our lady prez Livingstone's dream conference of the Magnolia league. Sponsored by none other than Chip & Joanna Gaines. Will you be happy with a 5-6 team? You get more wins but still heading in wrong direction.

I'm sure you said the same about Tevin Reese and Monaray Baldwin. Newsflash: A lot of slot guys are small.

Yeah I actually like this pickup. Kind of reminds me of Tevin Reese or any of the underrecruited multi-athlete guys that Briles would find

Speed kills and having Hawkins and Baldwin opposite each other in four-wide sets will be NICE.

I hope this slot guy can catch #1 something Reese and Baldwin struggle with. I also hope he is a better route runner than Baldwin.

Uhh,

We already have a Monoray Baldwin on the roster, that's the point. We should be looking for receivers with some size rather than a clone of Baldwin.

We're switching to a spread. There's more than enough room for two talented slot receivers on the field now, much less the roster.

LOL! You obviously have not watched any game film of a Spavital coached offense. Watch some game film from this year and tell me if you see any semblance of a spread offense.

You realize this wasn't his first year as a play-caller, right? There's a long track record to look at.

He played to the talent he had at Cal this year, which included a good running back and tight end(s). But he's an Air Raid guy at heart. We'll see a lot of four-wide sets next season with the personnel we have.

This should be self explanatory but people only see what they want to see. Spavital literally said when he was hired that he adapts his offense to what he has on campus. I'm sure he wants to start the year off with a more wide open offense. The fans want it and the coaches, although late even realized it during then season that we need a more wide open offense to be successful

With the additions now and to come what he sees on campus next September is not what he would have seen on campus in September 2023. There is no reason to believe the offense will be anything like this past season. It is one thing to adapt your offense to what you have when you are stuck with what you have. Another is to have an opportunity to get what you want before you have to play. The opportunity is occurring now to get way more of what you want to be able to run the offense you want in 2024 because you can bring in players to run that offense.
