BREAKING: Anu Solomon wins job, will start at QB for Bears

SicEm365 has learned that graduate transfer quarterback Anu Solomon will start Baylor's season opener against Liberty on Saturday.

Solomon beat out sophomore Zach Smith and freshman Charlie Brewer to earn the rights as the starter for the first game of the season.

After arriving in January, Solomon went through spring drills and created the race between he and Smith, a 2016 four-game, as well Brewer, a true freshman who arrived in Waco as an early graduate.

In three seasons at Arizona, Solomon threw for 6,922 yards, 49 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. In his two full seasons for the Wildcats in 2014 and 2015, Solomon averaged 258.4 yards and slightly under two passing touchdowns per game.

During final season for Arizona in 2016, Solomon missed seven games due to injury.

Baylor begins their season on Saturday against Liberty at McLane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.

Feel bad for Zack Smith. The kid stayed last year when a bunch of folks fled. He grew as a player. I'm disappointed!

I agree and hoped to see his loyalty pay off...but other than Sridhar...I don't think a "bunch of folks" left.

Seeing two WRs and QB that hurt to see on that aggy roster. But yeah there was not a mass exodus as was predicted

Also interesting there on Rashaud Paul, if he ends up being the next Tannehill will they achieve Mack Brown "recruited as a safety" fame?

I knew Zach was too slow for this team, even if we had a good O-line.

Plus Anu technically has more experience.

What do you mean "for this team? " You note that it has nothing to do with the inexperience or talent level of the offensive line. Nothing indicated by this staff suggests that the quarterback running will be of significant emphasis, and that they intend to use more pro sets than the previous offense. Was Johnny Unitas too slow for the Colts offense? Was maneuverability a big part of Peyton Manning's game? Tom Brady? Ben Roethlisberger? Troy Aikman?
Everything indicated by the staff suggests that our O-line is poor, inexperienced and thin and as a result we will need a mobile QB. Matt Rhule himself stated we need a more mobile QB.

No CFB team has NFL level O-lineman. You're comparing 2 very different games.

The rise of the dual-threat quarterback has coincided with a move toward uptempo offenses (which we are still exercising). These passers are known as much for their mobility as their throwing prowess, and the ability to quickly decide whether to throw or run is essential in a fast-paced attack.

Last year Zach had 25 rushing attempts which resulted in a loss of -26 yards.

Anu had 67 attemps with a gain of +198 yards.

I like Anu starting. He's a senior with experience.

Also good for Zach...he was thrown to the wolves last year. He's a true sophomore. This gives him a year to learn the offense, build his confidence and mechanics and lead us next year. If all works out, and Anu plays well, maybe Zach can get a redshirt year out of this.

Good call CMR....let's support Anu.

Love the decision. I watched him play several times at Arizona. The kid can flat out play. With little depth at OL and several freshman players, we need a mobile QB.

It also sends a message to the rest of the team that no position is secure. You have to earn it.

Zach will have his day. And Brewer (or Bohanan) will be the future...

Sort of similar to how Russell Wilson led Wisconsin to a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth? Looking back, I bet the Badgers were really regretting having to start him that one year...

So some of the smart football minds giving their opinion suggest that perhaps the coaches who see them every day and watch the film of drills and practices simply do not know what they are doing. Their jobs depend on knowing but somehow they do not. My, simple me has always thought that coaches always put out what they think is the best team at the time when they consider all the various facts at their disposal. The coach has spoken and if wrong will speak again. We all know this is going to be a rough year. We need more lineman and a few larger ones. It does not make much difference who the QB is if there is not good protection. People down here in the swamp of the SEC have asked me how Stidham will do at Auburn. Answer-if well protected he will tear up the league and probably the best of them all. If not protected, who is up next for he will probably get hurt. Go Bears and a win will be a win. There are those of us that can remember the days(and there were many of them )when we worried about the likes of Liberty and got beat often. )

Right, but you said "even if we had a good o-line" he would be too slow. These quarterbacks I mentioned as well as countless others who played the college game were quite effective at the collegiate level as well despite having poor foot speed, and I would contest that they, in great part, would be so in the majority of college offenses today based on their ability to attack defenses with their arms and mental aptitudes that they bring to the game.

I would be surprised if Zach does not play quite a bit on Saturday.

This. Being the "starter" in this game is largely symbolic. Smith may actually get more reps than Solomon.

Did you not listen to a single thing CMR said in his press conference? Unless Anu shows a lack of effort, he should see almost all of the snaps until the game gets out of hand.

I'm an Arizona Wildcat and have watched Anu for years. The only thing that will keep Anu from starting and playing is Injury, There is a reason he started for arizona.

Here is his stats as a RS Freshman when they won the pack 12 south in 2014 and went 10-4

You had a 1 in 3 chance of being right. And this is the depth chart for one game right now.

Do you honestly think anyone gives a damn? The poster above is too kind - realistically, you had a 50/50 chance of being right. Do you try to boast about all things you accomplish that you have a 50/50 chance of doing?
