Gameday Thread: No. 4 Baylor at Kansas

WACO, Texas – The No. 4 Baylor women’s basketball team begins a two-game road swing at Kansas on Wednesday. Tip-off between the Bears and the Jayhawks is set for 6:30 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.

The game is available for streaming via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. A live radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Central Texas (1660 AM/92.3 FM), and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats.

STARTING FIVE

The Bears are off to their best start (14-0) in program history outside of the perfect 40-0 season by the 2012 national championship team.

Baylor joins No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 UCLA as the final three undefeated teams in Division I women’s basketball.

With the final point in Saturday’s 87-58 win over Houston, Yaya Felder became the fifth player on the active roster to reach 1,000-career points. Baylor is the only program in the country with five 1,000-point scorers on its current team.

Aijha Blackwell recorded her third double-double of the season on Saturday with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. The graduate senior now has a team-best 37 double-doubles in her career and the most double-figure scoring games (77) and double-digit rebounding performances (47) of any Bear.

The Bears shot a season-high 57.1% from the floor against Houston and moved to 265-2 all-time when shooting 50% or better from the field.

THE FINAL THREE

Baylor is one of three undefeated teams left in Division I women’s basketball along with No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 UCLA.

Of the three teams, Baylor is tied with South Carolina with 10 20-plus point victories this season while UCLA has seven.

Baylor and South Carolina are the only two undefeated programs in the country with at least one 20-plus point win over an AP Top 25 opponent. The Bears used a 21-point victory to take down No. 23 TCU on Jan. 3, while the Gamecocks have a 29-point win over then-No. 10 Notre Dame and a 38-point victory over then-No. 14 Maryland on their record.

SCOUTING THE SERIES WITH KANSAS

Baylor is 39-8 all-time against Kansas and 15-5 in Lawrence. The Bears have won the last 19 meetings between the two programs, and Wednesday’s contest is the first of two meetings this season. Baylor’s last loss in Lawrence was Jan. 19, 2014.

LAST TIME OUT VS. KANSAS

Last season saw the Bears sweep the two-game series with Kansas, picking up a ranked win over the Jayhawks in Lawrence (75-62) and 77-73 victory in Waco. In the series-opening win on the road, Sarah Andrews dropped a team-high 27 points in a full 40 minutes of action while adding four assists and pair of steals. At the Ferrell Center, Andrews turned in another 20-point performance, finishing with 23 and a team-leading eight assists.

Not a great start to this week, especially since Iowa State just knocked off WVU.

Have to bounce back Saturday

I'm old enough to remember when Baylor Basketball (men or women) played defense. Lowest opponent FG % for the men over the last three games is 47%. Kansas shot 52% against the women. <sigh>

Yeah...that. And the fact they let Kansas (0-3 in the Big 12) get any shot they wanted. If Kansas could make a first half layup, Baylor could have lost by 30 in this one.

Kim Mulkey's teams focused on and were built on two things: Defense and Low Post Domination.

CKM got/mastered college WBB.....and why we used to have a powerhouse WBB program.

The girls got a little cocky, they'll be fine. Kim Mulkey lost games too. Let's go Ladies!

How seriously is Sara hurt? Is her injury having a negative impact on the wrest for the team or is there another reason everyone seems to be playing so uncharacteristically poorly?

MBB had multiple upsets today as well including Houston, Kansas, Clemson, & Tennessee.

College basketball has a lot of parity. Too bad it's not the case in cfb.

I think there is more ways to play than just that way. It was good i mean she has the championships to prove it. Our defense typically is good. I do not know who ranked is but we had the top 2 defense in the country. We were not hitting shots, we not only let Jackson get us but the whole team was on fire tonight. The refs were bad but it is a part of the game sometimes you agree sometimes you hate their guts. I think because of our size disadvantage we have to start our fast in the beginning and also out of the half. It gets us in a groove. I do know that when we play them again in waco we will get our revenge and the outcome will be different. Hopefully fans don't go away from this team because of one bad game. It sucks because just looking at this thread you can see that CNC has to be Perfect to please anyone and she never gets grace. I feel that is why me personally i support these teams harder than the ones in the past. We lost some games when Mulkey was here that were disappointing. Like Arkansas, Iowa State, Stanford, UCLA. But what those teams got when they came home was a packed house and the support from fans to regroup and push for a big run going into March and April and I really hope that we can give our program that. Watch the press conference you will
see the fire in Coach Nicki's eyes that this won't happen again. I'm glad the girls now have the film to understand the importance of coming out strong.

Well said. I still have complete confidence in CNC and this team. The loss is surprising & disappointing but not the end of the season. If anything, it shows how much parity we have in the Big 12. Ultimately that's a good thing.

I have no doubt that this team will learn from this and might come out better in the long run.

No. I posted last season. Hadn't necessarily been in CNC's corner. Waiting to see how season unfolds. It'll be interesting to see the direction things go forward. I just saw things tonight that looked like last year… SLOPPY!!!!! BU went 20+ previous years not being that SLOPPY. CNC has time to correct tonight. As Gust Avrakotos said in Charlie Wilson's War… "We'll see".

yeah it happens to a lot of teams a sloppy night. I think it just really exposes us when our one weakness is also exposed on a sloppy and poor shooting night. We do not have a center ready to play against big players down low. We have to be able to shoot and play in transition when we face these teams. The fouls didn't help. but i won't use that excuse. We shot bad, we turned it over too much. We also need guards to rebound more or will help our bigs get to run.

A huge bright spots are Aijha is really getting back k to form.

I've got the guy on ignore, but since you responded it shows up. He seems to have forgotten the Kim Mulkey team that in 2009 lost at Kansas 69-45. Kim's team could stink it up from time to time as well.....and usually got roasted on the WBB board (probably then it was on the old baylorfans board when they did. It's basketball. It happens. We are looking for the inside presence however. Hopefully Lety will come along quickly.

The problem is, they won't. She'll have to win 3 (including an undefeated season) and start wearing outfits from 1970's Elton John in order for them to stop yapping. Even then they probably won't.

You will have nights where the shots just won't fall. Most of our three point attempts were good, open shots, and we couldn't capitalize. Not much to do about that besides shake your fists at the fickle gods of basketball.

What was incredibly disappointing was our nonchalance on the boards. Since we don't have size in the post, we need that much more effort in rebounding. Kansas played with total commitment to winning the 50/50 balls, and we mostly stood around watching them do it.

The KU game was the perfect storm of problems for this team this year. We've avoided many of these pitfalls this year, but they hit us like a blizzard on Wednesday (pun intended):

1) Dominated by a Post with size - Congratulations to Taiyanna Jackson on an outstanding performance. We've played against 6'6" length this year, and limited the damage from all of them, but there were a few key differences with Jackson:
  • Speed - she's extremely fast for her size, so Dree and Ashia couldn't outrun her down the floor on fast breaks to get easy buckets. Plus, they shot a blistering 52%, and it's hard to fast break off a made bucket.
  • Fouls - she stayed out of foul trouble. She had 19 rebounds, 3 blocks, and countless altered shots, and played aggressively, but only had 3 fouls on the day.
  • Free Throws - she was 9/13 on the day, far above her 40% season average.
  • Aggressive on boards - she pursued every rebound, and got many points on putbacks.
2) Poor 3 point shooting - our worst outing of the year, we shot 20% from 3 point range. Because we are smaller and faster than most of our elite opponents, we've got to hit 3 point shots at a high rate. We're 38% on the season, which is great, but 20% wont' get it done. It also seemed that we were generally getting open looks from 3, as KU was sagging into the lane and clogging our drivew and interior passes, we just didn't take advantage.
3) They played downhill - Franklin, Kersgieter, and Nichols were aggressive at driving to the hoop, and we didn't defend it well. We really don't have a great rim protector. Buggs is probably the best, but she was struggling with all the blows to her face on Wednesday. Dree and Aisha are effective defenders on the floor, but don't have the length or atheticism to defend the rim. Lety has the length, but hasn't developed the timing or understanding of angles to reach her potential as a shot blocker (let's pool together dollars and send her to train with Hakeem in Houston this summer). KU was attacking the rim, making shots and drawing fouls, and Jackson was gobbling up the misses. Good formula.
4) Desperate team playing at home - KU really needed the win, and they were more active and aggressive than we were. The real question is how that team is 8-7. They've lost to some excellent teams (UConn, Virginia Tech) but the puzzler is how they lost to Tech, Iowa State, and Penn State).

In a perfect world, this loss is good for us. It helps us identify our flaws to correct them, and it removes the pressure of trying to protect a perfect season.

Why was our ball screen D so much worse? It seems like we usually switch more which should prevent a lot of the drives... I'm sure we'd have conceded some Jackson post-ups but the PPP would've been lower

I recall earlier in the season we would switch a lot, then when we'd occasionally hedge and it'd be far less effective. I'm less concerned w/ the O. Obviously we have issues against zone but the O's struggles seem more to do w/ being in half-court the whole game. We really did not get paint penetration to kick out to the 3-pt line, so it makes sense that our threes did not fall

I think if we can figure out how to not hemorrhage so bad on D our O will be fine. Quite a trap game we just had

Don't think it was a "trap" game for the team and coaches. KU was picked third in the conference and lost to Virginia Tech by 1 and UConn by 8.

I think you make good points about KU, but they had looked much worse lately. Iowa St was looking like the better team which also has the better home-court advantage. It's also hard not to look at 7-7 and think 7-7

If we shoot 40%+ from 3 like we normally do that's a very different game. It gave them the chance to play more aggressively due to the size of the lead beginning halfway through the third quarter.

But credit to them, they seized the moment.
