WACO, Texas – The No. 13 Baylor women’s basketball team hits the road to take on Houston at the Fertitta Center at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The game is available for streaming via the Big 12 Now on ESPN+.  A live radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Central Texas(1660 AM/92.3 FM) and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats.

STARTING FIVE

Sunday’s game at Houston marks the Bears’ second of two outings against the Cougars. Baylor will have completed home-and-homes with its second conference opponent, and still have a pair of games against West Virginia and one more against Kansas and Oklahoma State to wrap up the two-game series scheduled for the season.

Graduate senior Aijha Blackwell is the only player on the roster with more than 800 career rebounds and needs just four boards to reach 1,000. She’s finished in double figures on the boards in four-straight contests and six of the last seven.

Senior Sarah Andrews has 214 career 3-pointers and needs 47 more to break Odyssey Sim’s record of 258. The senior guard has hit at least one from range in 18 of 20 games this year.

The Bears had a different leading scorer in their first six games to start the year. In Big 12 play, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, Bella Fontleroy and Dre’Una Edwards have each led Baylor in scoring twice.

In the setback to No. 12 Texas on Thursday night at Foster Pavilion, Yaya Felder accounted for eight of BU’s 16 points off the bench.

SCOUTING THE SERIES WITH HOUSTON

Houston holds the 33-16 advantage in the all-time series with Baylor, but January’s outing between the two was just the third meeting since the turn of the century. The Bears used an 87-58 win to take down the Cougars in Waco on Jan. 6 for BU’s third conference win of the season.

Yaya Felder earned her 1,000th career point while Aijha Blackwell turned in her third double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Prior to the 2021-22 season, Baylor and Houston hadn’t played a game against each other since the 1995-96 season.

Allowed Coogs to tie but some good rebounding.
LO-Buggs makes both FT's to give Baylor the lead again.

Talk about playing down to the level of your competition. More sloppy play until the last 2 minutes or so when we closed on a 7-0 run to be up 8 at half.

The passing and ball protection by this team is really bad. 26 turnovers!!! Hard to watch.

The 23 point victory on the road almost erases that

The sad thing is that Andrews, a 4yr player here is the cause of a lot of them. Edwards is right there with her. Seniors that ought to know better than to try to force passes into traffic. Just like in football you throw into double coverage you usually get picked. Like Coach was saying after the game we are trying to hit home runs when we need to take singles.

During part of the game I felt like I did during watching some of Drew's teams in the circa-Lace era. I spent more time yelling at the TV because of wild passes and trying to dribble where there wasn't any place to do so (although in this game it wasn't so much that as it was the passes) than staying quiet. I suppose they are pressing to do well, but it is really giving up a lot of possessions. It was the only thing that made this game close for a half. The shooting was better, but we just need to get better that if it is going to take a perfect pass to connect for an easy shot it is much better to forego the pass and just work the half-court offense.

On another topic Lety still needs a lot of development. The potential is there but she has got to learn how to jump for rebounds and how to set a screen without fouling. She seems somewhat lost out there and unsure of herself. She will have to learn how to be aggressive and know that she belongs on the court.

It is nice to have a comfortable win on the road for sure.

I love basketball, but admittedly am a novice when it comes to the x's and o's and player assessment. With that said, is it true that "the potential is there?" I see very little in the way of drive with her. She just kind of meanders around.

I really hope I'm wrong and that there is just something there that I'm not seeing.

The potential is 6'7". You can't coach that height, but you can develop it. She was a highly ranked HS recruit so the basic skills should be there but must be developed for the college level. I suspect there is some intimidation when getting thrown in games at the Big XII level. A lot of the things that you need to do in college to be successful you didn't have to do in HS because you aren't going up against that height in most HS games. At least that is my guess.
