No. 18 Baylor Falls to BYU 78-66 in Provo

The No. 18 Baylor Bears fell to the unranked Brigham Young Cougars on the road in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars led the Bears for 37:16 in this beatdown. In a game where it seemed BYU could do no wrong, Baylor got beat at their own game. The key to BU’s succcess early in the season was their ability to share the ball and come down with it off the board; they were outdone in both categories tonight. Brigham Young out-rebounded the Bears 45-32 and out did them in assists 20-18.

BYU shot 50.2% from the field and 40% from outside the arc, meanwhile Baylor shot 34.8% adn 32.1%, respectively. Lauren Gustin led the way for the Cougars, putting up the only double-double for the Coogs. She came away with 23 points after going 9-14 from the field and 5-6 from the line, Gustin also put up 16 boards. For the Bears, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs put up a double-double of her own with 17 points and 12 rebounds, going 8-10 from the field and 1-1 from the line. 

Other double-figure scorers for the Bears were Yaya Felder with 15 points and Jana Van Gytenbeek with ten. 

The Bears never gave up the fight, playing all the way to the final buzzer; and Felder deserves some kudos for her grit tonight. With 42 seconds left on the clock Felder stole the Ball from Amari Whiting and in her hopes of getting to the rim without burning too much time she got tripped up with Whiting. Felder went to the ground with enough force to knock a tooth out afterwhich she left the court in what I can only imagine to be extreme pain.
