Commodores Cower Before The Bears, BU Wins 80-63
The No. 5 seeded Bears overcame a second quarter slide to breezy by No. 12 seeded Vanderbilt.
Bella Fontleroy led the Bears tonight, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards. Baylor had three other double-figure scores in Sarah Andrews with 13, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs with 11 and Jana Van Gytenbeek leading BU off the bench with 10.
In a score that looks reminiscent of the early-season team that started off 14-0, there was still plenty of room for improvement on the court. Baylor committed 19 turnovers and 23 fouls. Another area of improvement, the Bears were 16-31 on layups tonight; we’ve had some issues here throughout the season and it is likely to be a stress point in our games deeper in the tournament.
The saving grace tonight was the 42.9% shooting from deep. Fontleroy led from outside the arc, going 4-7, Andrew’s and Van Gytenbeek both drained two from deep, going 2-4 and 2-3, respectively.
The Bears will face the No. 4 seeded Virginia Tech on Sunday. VT downed Marshall 92-49.
