Baylor Baseball Ends Four-Game Losing Streak, Beats Cincinnati on Friday, 8-6

WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (9-17, 4-7) ended its four-game losing streak with an 8-6 victory over Cincinnati (16-12, 4-4) Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.

Baylor scored more runs in Friday’s win (8) than their last three conference games combined (6). The Bears’ batting order came through and picked up nine base knocks and three players had multi-hit performances – Daniel Altman (Sr.), Hunter Teplanszky (Jr.) and Zach Mazoch (So.). 

The Bears controlled much of the contest, but the game got interesting late when Cincinnati cut into BU’s lead with a grand slam in the eighth inning. Veteran lefty Kobe Andrade (Sr.) closed out the game on the mound, however, to secure the victory with 1.2 perfect frames.

“The guys were ultra-competitive [tonight],” head coach Mitch Thompson said after the victory. “I thought we took good at-bats throughout the night, and I thought our pitching was good.”

Teplanszky got the Bears on the board when he crushed a two-out, three-run bomb over the right field wall for his second home run of the season.

Baylor’s ace, right-handed pitcher Mason Marriott (Jr.), didn’t have his best stuff Friday night but was able to string together four strong innings of work. 

Marriott evaded multiple jams and finished the contest allowing two earned runs and eight hits across 4.1 innings pitched while striking out four.

The Bears added two more runs in the fourth when right fielder Enzo Apodaca (RJr.) lined a two-run double down the right-field line. Apodaca went 1-for-2 at the dish but reached base in four of his five plate appearances.

In the fifth, Altman smoked a double down the left-field line for his fourth extra-base hit of the season. Later in the frame, Mazoch roped a two-out RBI single into right field to extend Baylor’s lead to 6-2.

The Bears added two more runs in the seventh when left fielder Wesley Jordan (Jr.) plated a run with an RBI sacrifice fly and Mazoch delivered his second RBI base knock of the night.

In relief of Marriott, left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder's (So.) 19-inning scoreless streak came to an end when UC’s first baseman, Josh Kross (Jr.), crushed a grand slam to cut Baylor’s lead to 8-6 and made things interesting late.
