Top Quotes

Head coach Mitch Thompson on what he sees from TCU:

  • “Their lefty is probably as good as anybody in the conference. They have a good club. Even though they’ve struggled in conference at times, they have a good club. This is a team that, right now, is scheduled to be an NCAA Regional team, so you know the talent is there. We just have to come out and play our game and score one more than them.”

First baseman Cole Posey (Sr.) on the team remaining confident despite the losing streak in Big 12 play:

  • “If we can pitch it how we can, play good defense and get the bats going again – I like our chances. That stretch we had in the middle of conference [play] is closer to the team that we are. We’ve had some lulls and ups and downs, but if we can tap back into that, I like our chances and our possibilities.”

Left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder (So.) on the team’s recent struggles with free passes:

  • “We’re focusing too much on the free passes. We’re like, ‘Oh, it’s a 3-2 count, I can’t walk him.’ We have to flip our mindset to attacking hitters and being confident in our stuff.”

What I’m Looking For This Weekend + Other Notes

Baylor Athletics
LF/DH Wesley Jordan (Jr.) suffered a concussion last weekend against West Virginia and is questionable for the TCU series.
  • Left fielder Wesley Jordan (Jr.) extended his on-base streak to 30 games after going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs against Sam Houston on Tuesday, April 23. Jordan became the first player since Davis Wendzel (37) in 2018 to reach safely in 30 consecutive games. In Friday’s opener against West Virginia, however, Jordan was hit by a pitch and removed from the game, presumably for a concussion; he did not return at any point during the series. The star slugger is “day-to-day” for this weekend, and his absence would be a massive blow to Baylor’s already depleted lineup.
  • Houston (6-15) and BYU (6-18) continue to separate themselves toward the bottom of the conference, and neither will likely earn a bid to Arlington. The final couple of spots, however, appear to be a three-team race between Baylor (9-12), TCU (10-14), and UCF (9-12), making this upcoming weekend’s series between the Bears and Horned Frogs massive for both teams.
  • TCU entered the season as the favorite to win the conference and was ranked as high as No. 3 in national polls. The Horned Frogs are way more talented than their record indicates, and for whatever reason, they just haven’t put it together this season in Big 12 play. Usually, TCU has a knack for getting hot late in the spring, and it would be a massive misstep to sleep on this team going into this weekend’s series.
    Baylor Athletics
This weekend’s series is crucial for Big 12 standings – the winner will have a much easier path to the conference tournament.
  • Prediction: In order for Baylor to get a series win this weekend, it will need to start on the mound. In the current five-game conference losing streak, the pitching staff has surrendered 45 earned runs and 36 walks in 41 innings – that absolutely cannot happen this weekend if the Bears want any chance at winning. If the pitching staff prevents free passes, Baylor has a big opportunity to take two of three and set itself in a good position to make the conference tournament. If not, the Bears could be looking at missing out on Arlington in back-to-back years for the first time in program history.

Pitching has been pretty dog water the last couple of years. Also defensively not great either.

Almost as painful to watch as Baylor football 2023, although still more entertaining than a Grimes offense.
