Utah has played consistently great defense for over a decade now.

Since Morgan Scalley — the current head coach in waiting — became their defensive coordinator in 2016, the Utes' average defensive FEI finish has been 18th, with a high finish of seventh in 2019 and a low finish of 33rd in his first season. So we’re talking about a unit that is able to reach up into the elite of college football in its best years and is still a very good unit in its worst years.
