Sawyer Robertson to Start at QB, Dequan Finn Out With Injury

Baylor redshirt junior quarterback Sawyer Robertson will start for the Bears against Air Force on Saturday night, SicEm365 has learned. Sixth-year senior transfer quarterback Dequan Finn is day-to-day while dealing with a couple of small ailments suffered against No. 11 Utah last weekend.

Robertson, who started four games for Baylor in 2023, was in a battle for the starting job through fall camp before Finn was named the starter ahead of the season opener. Robertson has seen action in one game this fall, completing 3-of-5 passes for 67 yards and a score against Tarleton.

Sawyer Robertson (RJr.) will start at quarterback for the Bears against Air Force on Saturday night. Dequan Finn (6Sr.) will miss the game after suffering a rib injury against No. 11 Utah last weekend.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound redshirt junior played in six games in 2023 for the Bears after transferring from Mississippi State, throwing for 864 yards on 56.4% passing with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for 69 yards and a score.

Robertson spent time in a similar offensive scheme for two seasons at Mississippi State under the direction of the late Mike Leach.

“[The offense] is definitely different in some areas, but it is essentially the same thing,” Robertson said during fall camp. “I love [the spread]. It’s fun, and I feel comfortable in it. It’s good to have some familiarity with everything.”

During fall camp, Aranda mentioned Robertson’s calmness and poise in the pocket as a key part of his development this offseason, making the original quarterback decision tough.

“With Sawyer, it’s his competitiveness; here’s an offense that fits him,” Aranda said during the summer. “Here’s an offense where he can play and not have to think as much.”

In Baylor’s final game of the 2023 season, Robertson had the best game of his career against West Virginia. He completed 17-of-19 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 33 yards. Baylor fell to West Virginia 34-31.

A consensus four-star prospect out of Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas, Robertson was named the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year as a senior in 2021. He helped lead the Mustangs to the Class 5A regional semifinals while throwing for 4,509 yards and 58 TDs while leading Coronado to a 12-1 record. He also rushed for 233 yards and five scores.

Robertson finished his prep career at Coronado ranked in the top 15 all-time in Texas high school football history in career completions (No. 8; 813), career TD passes (No. 10; 135) and career passing yards (13th; 11,302). He threw for 11,302 yards and 135 TDs in his career on 813-of-1,265 passing.

Well, here we go! Interesting Finn out with "a couple small ailments." I read that as not stepping up and we're going to give Sawyer a shot but keep our options open.

I immediately changed my prediction in the other thread to a Baylor win now. We actually have a chance of moving the football and I'll watch the game at least.

I think this might actually be the best outcome for everyone for this game. It allows Sawyer a chance to get some meaningful time without creating unnecessary controversy. If Sawyer's great, he keeps playing and Finn becomes a package guy. If he's not, we figure out the quarterback situation as we go once Finn is healthy again.

This is a low-pressure way to open up the quarterback competition. I like it.

"Injured" with convenient timing.

Ailment suffered: Inability to throw an accurate pass in two games.

He got banged up in the Utah game and had to leave for a play. He came back the next series, but he may have experienced more pain once the adrenaline wore off.

Who is the backup QB for tonight?

Good!

I assume Nate Bennett.

I would assume it's Bennett. He's the only other scholarship quarterback we have, and I'm not aware of any walk-ons who would supplant him.

I think what he's saying is, is Finn healthy enough to suit up and go if needed? Or is he fully out and thus Bennett is the back up?

Well...there's no run threat with him so the OL better show up or were very one dimensional.

It sounds like he's out. Hopefully we don't have to find out ... and Bennett is getting two or three possessions at the end of the game because we're comfortably in control.

Robertson is a decent runner. He's not going to give you any of the explosiveness you get with Finn, but he's mobile. He's had positive rushing yards in every game he's played at Baylor but one, and that includes sacks.

You can use him on some designed QB power stuff, though I'm not sure we'd want to with no experienced backup.

We'll see how much of a problem the OL is.

Wally pipp situation? Time will tell

I think that might actually be the best-case scenario. With Robertson having another year after this one, it would probably more ideal to roll with the younger of our two QBs if he's good enough to run with the position. And Finn can still be used as a package guy in the future.

Sheesh. What a waste of NIL money Finn was. Good for him for getting paid, but that money should have to come out of Mack's enormous salary

***...you think Mack decides NIL?..in your crazzzzzy theory why wouldn't it come out of Arandas salary?

Not RJ. He's pitiful. Bobcats put him in for 2 series just to get him some playing time before garbage time and it nearly cost the game. He is very poor
