All Sports Report: October Looms

Soccer

• Picked up back-to-back 1-1 ties this week against No. 16 Colorado and No. 22 TCU. The Bears are now 1-2-2 in conference play.

• Baylor scored on an own goal against Colorado, while Hannah Augustyn picked up her second goal of the season against TCU.

• The Bears continue conference play this week at Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 4.

Volleyball

• No. 14 Baylor volleyball won a pair of four-setters to start conference play against new members Arizona and No. 14 Arizona State.

• The Bears hit over .250 in both matches and finished a nine-match homestand.

• The win over No. 14 ASU was the first top-15 victory for the Bears since defeating No. 3 Wisconsin in Aug. 2022.

• BU starts the conference 2-0 for the first time since 2021.

• The Bears have a week off before facing No. 22 TCU on Sunday in Fort Worth, to be broadcast on ESPN. The match will start a three-match road trip.

Men’s Tennis

• Overall went 11-10 in singles, 16-10 in doubles at the ITA All-American Championships

• Doubles duos Marko Miladinovic/Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Devin Badenhorst/Zsombor Velcz both earned qualifying bids to the NCAA Individual Championships that will be hosted at Baylor in November

• Miladinovic/Brostrom Poulsen made it all the way to the finals before falling to San Diego 7-6(4), 2-6, 10-5

• Miladinovic had an impressive run in singles and doubles. Beginning in the prequalifying draw in singles, Miladinovic advanced all the way to the main draw, going 5-2 and earning two ranked singles wins

• Badenhorst/Velcz made it to the semifinals in the main draw, going 4-2 and earning four ranked wins including over No. 13 Wright/Chang of Cal, 7-6(2), 7-6(3)

• Bears host the Big 12/SEC Challenge this weekend, Oct. 4-6, at the Hurd Tennis Center

Women’s Tennis

• The Bears closed their time at the ITA All-American Championships with a 3-5 singles record and a 1-1 doubles record.

• Baylor is back on court for the ITA Texas Regional Championships at TCU on October 10-14.

Football

• Dropped a 34-28 contest to #22/22 BYU on Saturday, but held the Cougars to just three points and 81 total yards of offense in the second half, nearly completing a comeback after trailing by as many as 21 points.

• Through five games, BU’s defense is holding opponents to an average of 4.0 second-half points per game. Opponents are averaging just 107.6 yards of total offense in the second half against the Bears.

• Junior QB Sawyer Robertson set career highs in passing attempts (48), completions (27), yards (324) and touchdowns (three) in becoming the first Bear to surpass 300 passing yards since Blake Shapen at Cincinnati (10/21/23).

• Redshirt Junior WR Josh Cameron led the Bears with a career-high seven catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns, the first multi-TD game of his career.

• Baylor now travels to face #16/16 Iowa State in Ames on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. 

Men’s Golf

• Men’s golf returns to action at the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship Oct. 7-9 at the Clubs at Houston Oaks.

• Zach Heffernan will lead the Bears back to Houston Oaks after becoming the third player in Baylor history to complete a 5-0 week, back in 2023

• The Bears finished second in 2023, the third time in program history BU finished first or second in the event’s six years of existence.

Cross Country

• Women finished 27th // Men finished 33rd at Gans Creek Classic

• Women were led by Ruth Kimeli, who earned a top-10 finish in a stacked field

• The 8th place finish marks the first time a Baylor woman has finished in the top-10 at Gans Creek

• Her time of 20:12.3 in the 6k is the 18th fastest 6k time recorded on the Gans Creek Cross Country Course

• Baylor returns to Texas for its final regular season tournament at the Arturo Barrios Invite in College Station, Oct. 18

Equestrian

• Baylor finished off the preseason with a scrimmage against Tarleton. The BU coaches instructed them on two of the four events as they don’t have all four events at Tarleton

• The Bears won 19-1 against the Texans, sweeping the western events and Fences.

• BU has a break before facing current No. 1 TCU in Burleson on Oct. 10 at 10am at Bear Creek Farms.
