Baylor Football Duo Claims Big 12 Weekly Awards
IRVING, Texas – Baylor football redshirt junior quarterback Sawyer Robertson and redshirt freshman running back Bryson Washington have been named Big 12 Players of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference office.
Robertson, the league’s Offensive Player of the Week, returned to his hometown of Lubbock, Texas, and threw for a career-high five touchdowns with 274 yards through the air in BU’s dominating 59-35 win at Texas Tech. Robertson became the first Bear in nine seasons to throw for five TDs as Seth Russell was the last to do so on Oct. 17, 2015, vs. West Virginia. This marked the BU signal caller’s third consecutive game with at least three passing touchdowns. Robertson now leads the Big 12 with an 83.8 QBR and has thrown for 1,319 yards and 14 touchdowns this season with just three interceptions.
On just 10 carries, Washington ran for a career-high 116 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s victory. He exploded for long runs of 44 and 34 yards, but punched in a pair of 1-yard scores to add to the tally. His efforts helped the Bears to a season-high 59 points, the most in a Big 12 game under fifth-year head coach Dave Aranda and most since scoring 61 at Kansas on Nov. 30, 2019. BU’s 59 points were also the most by an FBS program in Week Eight and tied for the most in a conference game by a Power Four team this season. This marked Washington’s second 100-yard effort of the season as he now leads the Bears with 302 yards on the ground in 2024 to go along with three TDs.
This is the third time in the last four seasons the Baylor has had two Big 12 weekly award recipients in the same week, as Gabe Hall (Defensive) and Richard Reese (Newcomer) were honored together on Oct. 31, 2022, and Trestan Ebner (Special Teams) and Garmon Randolph (Co-Defensive) were recognized on Sept. 27, 2021.
Robertson marks BU’s first Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week since 2020 when Charlie Brewer earned the award on Nov. 30, following a 32-31 vs. Kansas State. Washington is Baylor’s fifth Big 12 Newcomer of the Week all-time, joining JaMycal Hasty (2016), Jalen Hurd (2018) and Richard Reese (twice, 2022). Both Robertson and Washington are first-time Big 12 award honorees.
