Texas A&M nose tackle Samu Taumanupepe has committed to Baylor following his official visit on Thursday. He becomes the Bears' first transfer portal commit of the 2024-2025 offseason cycle.

Once Taumanupepe entered the portal, the coaching staff immediately targeted him and quickly landed the highly coveted prospect to fill a position of need.

During his redshirt freshman season, the 6-foot-3, 350-pound nose tackle recorded six tackles in limited snaps at Texas A&M.

Taumanupepe fills a major hole for the Bears, as the position has been in flux since Apu Ika's departure to the NFL following the 2022 season. Senior nose tackle Elinus Noel III anchored the position this year but is out of eligibility. Taumanupepe gives the staff a chance to solidify this position for this season and future years.

Out of Atascocita High School, the three-star recruit in the 2023 class held offers from Miami, Oregon, TCU, Texas Tech, Colorado, Kansas and Houston, among others.

Taumanupepe has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

He's definitely big, his film makes him look more like 380. He's strong but not very nimble at that weight and likely not an every down player. Still, he should get his share of playing time especially if he can drop some of that excess weight.

Noel wasn't an every down player this year but was very effective in this same role. If this guy can give us what we got from Noel this season, I'll be very happy.

Strategically a big get. He will fill the space eating 3-4 nose tackle niche pretty well

Yep. Don't expect big stats, but if he can eat space and draw/occupy blocks, he'll be a huge part of an effective run defense -- as Noel was for us this season.

Jones and Thomas got a whole lot of tackles as a result of the unheralded work those in front of them did.

Wonder is Spav can work on a few goal line packages for him to play tight end.

Was this to get ahead of Trey Wilson going to SMU or will we need another D-Lineman on top of Samu?

No inside info but gotta assume we add a few more. We lose Randolph, Linton, Ma'ae and Noel along the DL. Those are all significant losses

Not sure about linemen, but we're supposedly making a big push for Brad Spence from Arkansas. Brother I think plays on the team

Did I miss something on Wilson? I haven't seen anywhere that he's leaving -- for SMU or otherwise.

Do you mean Tay'Shawn Wilson has entered the portal?

Tell you what if we can make inroads to Pacific that would be huge. Utah and Oregon
formula.
