
Baylor Men's Golf Moves to 19th after Two Rounds in La Quinta
LA QUINTA, Calif. — Baylor men’s golf ended the day in 19th place after a 5-over 295 in the second round of the Prestige on Tuesday at PGA West
Davis Ovard improved by six shots from round one with a 1-under 70, while senior Zach Heffernan continued his strong play with an even-par 72. Heffernan currently sits in a tie for 23rd place, five shots off the pace set by Kansas State’s Kobe Valociek.
San Diego is leading the team standings with an 11-under 557, giving it a six-shot lead over second-place Kansas. The Bears’ +10 578 has them chasing nine shots to get into the top 10 with 18 holes to play on Wednesday.
THE RUNDOWN
Heffernan continues to pace BU with a second-straight round at par or better on Tuesday. He jumped into red figures with a birdie at No. 11, only to fall back over par with bogeys at Nos. 13 and 15. The senior closed his outward nine strong with a birdie at No. 16 to turn at even par. Heffernan strung together another even-par nine on the inward half with a birdie at No. 4 and a bogey at No. 7.
Ovard moved up 26 spots to a tie for 70th on Tuesday. The sophomore shot out of the gate with three birdies in his first five holes before his first dropped shot of the day at No. 15. After turning at 2-under, Ovard carded a bogey at No. 1 but finished strong with eight-straight pars.
Drew Wrightson dropped into a tie for 70th on the heels of a 4-over 75 in round two. After three pars to open his second round, the junior bogeyed three of his final six holes on the opening nine at Nos. 13, 17 and 18. He settled in on the second nine, making just one bogey at No. 6 for his only blemish on the homeward half.
Vincent Stjernfeldt improved by two shots from his opening round with a 2-over 73 on Tuesday. Off to a good start with birdies at Nos. 10 and 12, the freshman ran into some trouble getting to the turn with bogeys at Nos. 13 and 18 around a double-bogey at No. 16. Turning in 38, the big Swede recorded a couple more bogeys at Nos. 1 and 4 ahead of two birdies at Nos. 5 and 9 to close out the round in a tie for 80th.
Jonas Appel shot a 4-over 75 to also finish Tuesday in a tie for 80th. Opening with six-straight pars, Appel played his final three holes of his first nine at 3-over after a bogey at No. 16 and a double at No. 18. The junior settled in through with eight-straight pars to start the homeward half before dropping a shot at the last hole with a bogey.
Over at the Prestige Individual Invite, Jackson Hymer rose to the top of the Baylor contingent with a 4-over 76 to tie for 12th, a stroke ahead of Sam Dossey, who is tied for 16th. At 8-over, Martin Kemp is tied for 19th, with one shot in front of Corbin Null and his 9-over 153. Aidan Gutierrez is tied for 29th and Patricio Gonzalez is in 35th.
