Top Quotes

Head coach Nicki Collen on what to expect from No. 12 Kansas State:

  • “Everything they do starts with defense. But I think they stretch you out a lot like Iowa State. We’re going to face three teams in a row that have a post presence, shooters all over and great spacing. Being able to disrupt their spacing will be really important.”

We don't play again till Sunday, 5 days of well deserved rest. Locked up double bye in the Big 12 Tourney, gives even more time to rest up and get healthy. Sic Em..
A double bye for the Conference Tournament is nice and all, but an outright regular season title is MUCH SWEETER!

That would all but guarantee us hosting the first 2 rounds in the Big Dance.

And of course, who wouldn't like hanging another banner in the rafters?

Grit. Poise. Relentlessness. Toughness. Focus. Basketball IQ. Emotional control. Belief.

These qualities were beautifully on display in Manhattan tonight. There have been many very impressive, meaningful, and memorable wins in the 4 years of the Collen era. This game should slot in with the best of them.

On the road, #14 team, Conference regular season championship at stake, without Buggs, and losing Bella early in the 3Q. On paper, given their size differential, we had no business winning that game after Bella went out. Somehow we kept competing and kept making buckets and pulled it out. KState went on a run in the 3rd by overpowering our smaller defenders, and it felt like they may carry the momentum to a win. We just wouldn't allow it. We outscored them in every Quarter, even in the 3Q and 4Q!

Netty was outstanding tonight, one of her best games in Green and Gold, on a night when we desperately needed her. She was dominant and efficient, with 24 points on 67% shooting, 12 Rebounds, and 3 Blocks. MVP.

Sundell is a load to guard, with an elite midrange game and the ability to back down smaller players; she scored 20. Bella was excellent on her for 2 Quarters, and Yaya and Waiata and Aliyah all gave excellent effort in a mismatched situation.

The box score says we won the game in two primary areas:
1) Turnovers - we forced 18 from them, and only committed 11. Hat tip to Jada, who was on the floor for 37 minutes and really did an excellent job of breaking down their defense with penetration, then finding open teammates. She had 11 Assists, 3 Turnovers; an Assist to Turnover ratio of 3.67!
2) 3 Point Shooting % - we shot 39% from 3, which was critical when they went to a zone and packed down to prevent passes to Netty, because the only thing open for us was to shoot over the zone; we had a huge 28 attempts, and we executed. They shot 13% from 3, which is astounding given that they average 36% as a team. It felt like they were in control of possessions when they slowed the pace and played power ball, backing our smaller defenders into the paint to take short shots over the top; when our defense was able to speed them up it felt like they got off balance and out of rhythm, and it led to poor outside shooting.

This team has been fun to watch and easy to get behind all year long, and it just keeps getting better. How wonderful to see a team that keeps improving all year, seems to enjoy playing with each other, and starts to peak at tournament time. What a fun ride.

Now we have a glorious 6 days of rest/recovery/game planning/practice until the epic showdown with TCU; a much needed and well earned respite. Prayers for both Bella's shoulder and Darianna's knee. It will be very difficult to beat TCU without them.

Many weeks ago I posted that I was disappointed with our defense effort and our ability to contest for four quarters. I do feel we have gotten tremendously better in that area and are a team of role players wh all have begun to understand what they provide to the team. So kudos to that.

That said, Kayla has got to step up and figure out how to better defend the pick and roll. It happened at least three times during the game against Iowa State and I saw it happen on back to back possessions tonight where the ball handler penetrates and gets past her defender (with the help of a screen) and Kayla comes up and they dump it to her player behind them for an easy bucket. TCU has the height to pull that play out at will and CNC has got to figure out a way not to get Kayla out of position Annette has the height to prevent it, but when Kayla comes in we need a plan.

That is the only consistent issue I see in regard to our defense. It has happened for several games in a row and I'm hoping we figure out a way to stop it. Otherwise, I think we have found a good clamp down, team defense strategy.
