No. 10 Baylor EQ Upsets No. 2 TCU To Conclude the Home Season

WACO, Texas – The 10th-ranked Baylor equestrian team upset No. 2 TCU, 11-9, at the Willis Family Equestrian Center on Saturday. 

The Bears (3-5, 2-3) took down the Horned Frogs (7-5, 3-1) in BU’s final home meet of the spring slate. The last time Baylor defeated TCU was October 21, 2022, at the Willis, 12-7.

THE RUNDOWN

Starting off the meet in Flat, Caroline Robelen earned the first point for the Bears, scoring an 84 and beating TCU’s 79. Lauren Stebbins came up half a point short, scoring a 79.5 on Albert to TCU’s 80. Madison Mitchell also came up short in her Flat matchup against TCU’s Ella Bostwick, scoring a 75.5 to Bostwick’s 83.5. Lauren Reid scored an 81 on Grande but was edged out by TCU’s 85. Juliette Early scored a 77.5 to beat TCU’s 68.5 and earn the second point for the Bears, bringing the score to 2-3 TCU. 

In Reining, Sadie Peters came out first for the Bears with a 59 on Polly but was edged out by TCU’s 68.25. The Bears responded with a three-point run, with Riley Cachat’s 68 to beat TCU’s 67, Emily Moomaw winning her matchup 69.25-63.5 and Bella Hehr outscoring TCU’s 70 with a 71.5. To close out the event, Ryan Jensen scored a 69.75 but came up short to TCU’s 71.5. Going into the half, the Bears and Horned Frogs were tied at 5-5. 

In Fences, Emma Covarrubias scored an 82.5 to TCU’s 75.5, giving TCU the point. The Bears followed that with a three-point run, with Juliette Early scoring an 83.5 to beat TCU’s 79.5 and Lauren Reid and Lauren Jorgensen both scoring an 80 to TCU’s 79.5 and 83.5 respectively. To close out the event, Madison Mitchell came up short scoring a 67 to TCU’s 83.5, bringing the score to 8-7 going into Horsemanship. 

In Horsemanship, Nadalee Vasquez was outscored by TCU’s 68. Taylor Smith responded with her ride on Gracie, scoring a 75 to edge out TCU’s 74.25. Anna Thron scored a 58.25, but it wasn’t enough to beat TCU’s 71. The Bears took the final two points of the meet, with Alexis Rutledge scoring a 75 to beat TCU’s 73.25 and Gianna Pozzi scored a 72.75 to beat TCU’s 70, bringing the final score to 11-9.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • This was the Bears first win against TCU since a 12-7 win on October 21, 2022, at the Willis. 
  • Alexis Rutledge earned an MOP for Horsemanship, her second MOP in a row for the event.

The Bears head on the road for a tri-meet with South Dakota State and Minnesota-Crookston at the DeHaan Equestrian Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
