Baylor men’s basketball filled the assistant coach position vacated by Bill Armstrong with Ron Sanchez, Tony Bennett's top assistant for many years at Virginia.
Sanchez spent five seasons as Charlotte’s head coach (2018-2023) and 11 seasons as an assistant at Virginia (2009-2018, 2023-2024) before taking over as the Cavaliers' interim head coach when Bennett stepped down before the season started last year.
Sanchez went to James Monroe High School in the Bronx before playing college basketball at SUNY Oneonta. During his time there, he earned SUNYAC All-Conference honors twice and was named SUNYAC Player of the Year for the 1995–1996 season.
Sanchez, a native of the Dominican Republic, immediately got into coaching following his playing career and spent several seasons at various SUNY schools before getting a volunteer assistant role at Indiana (2001-2003).
Following his time at Indiana, Sanchez joined Dick Bennett's staff at Washington State as director of basketball operations, and was elevated to assistant coach when Tony Bennett took over the helm of the Cougars, where he was a part of the team's 2007-2008 Sweet 16 squad.
