WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (30-20, 10-16) dropped its third straight conference series with a 4-0 shutout loss to Oklahoma State (24-21, 12-11) on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder (Jr.) started on the bump for the Bears and delivered his second quality start of conference play, surrendering just two earned runs and four hits across six innings while tying a season-high in conference play with six punchouts.

The batting order, however, gave Calder no run support throughout the contest and mustered just four hits, all of which came across the first three innings. The Bears went 1-for-12 (.083) with runners on, 0-for-3 (.000) with runners in scoring position and grounded into three double plays; it was the first time Baylor was shut out this season.

“Our pitchers threw well enough to win, but our offense did not compete well enough to get it done and win,” head coach Mitch Thompson said post-game. “[Calder] really settled in and competed his tail off. He had three pitches for strikes. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get back in the game for him.”

The Pokes jumped out to an early lead on a two-run home run from right fielder Nolan Schubart (Jr.) in the top of the first inning. The Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year has 14 long balls on the season and two this weekend.

After going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in Friday’s series opener, Baylor’s offensive woes continued into Saturday with designated hitter Hunter Simmons (RSr.) striking out with the bases loaded to end the first inning.

The Bears were threatening again in the second inning, with runners on first and second with two outs, but second baseman Travis Sanders (RSo.) went down swinging to close the frame.

Simmons and Sanders are a combined 3-for-46 at the plate with 26 strikeouts in May.

Oklahoma State’s starting pitcher, Mario Pesca (Jr.), found his groove and limited Baylor’s batting order to four base knocks before being pulled after a season-high eight frames. Pesca issued six free passes, but the Bears were unable to make him pay at any point.

“It’s incredibly frustrating,” Thompson said. “I’m frustrated. I think the hitters are frustrated. Again, we didn’t make enough adjustments. We have to do something differently. You can’t just keep rolling through inning after inning without making an adjustment. I give their guy credit. He kept rolling up ground balls, and they kept making plays for him; it was a pretty easy day for them.”

Baylor had one final chance to make things interesting with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth inning, but left fielder Wesley Jordan (Sr.) struck out looking.

Veteran reliever Caleb Bunch (Sr.) tossed two scoreless frames out of the bullpen for the Bears before surrendering a solo shot to center fielder Kollin Ritchie (So.) in the ninth to extend Oklahoma State’s lead to 3-0. The Pokes added another insurance run following an error.

Final: Oklahoma State 4, Baylor 0

W: Mario Pesca (5-2) L: Ethan Calder (3-6)

POTG: Ethan Calder (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 R, BB, 6 K, HP, 23 BF, 91 TP, 62 ST)

I'd give him 1 more year to see if he can take the next step and get into post season.

I agree - the seat should be warm heading into next season with the minimum expectation being at least getting to a regional. Should've been a doable year three of the rebuild goal, but it's obviously not happening.

Don't get me wrong, Mitch hasn't always made the best decisions, but the Baylor baseball program has resembled the Pittsburgh Pirates when it comes to financial investments from its "ownership". Not sure what type of coach we can attract when we frankly don't have the budget or the facilities to compete at the top level. One thing I can almost guarantee, is that we have Mitch till his contract expires. The athletic department doesn't seem to have the stomach to spend any money on this program, so I can't see them paying to buyout his contract.

I respectfully disagree, we can compete in the Big 12. There are several schools that don't have the facilities/money we have and compete.
In addition, we should have more than 10 wins in conference. We have enough talent to have more than 10 wins. Just look what happened when we upgraded the pitching coach. We got better.

Can we play triple headers on Sunday? We know how to win on Sundays.

It's been 13 years since we won a regular season conference championship. That's a long time for a team that supposedly recruits "talent" to not do anything.

Also who has worst facilities than us? And I am not talking about aesthetics.

Looks like with 11 conference wins we are in at number 12 if we win at least one game next weekend against UCF, giving us 12 wins. We lose all 3 and the 8 win team behind us wins 3 and gets to 11, uh oh.

Genuinely curious how many of you go to games routinely?

Based on ESPN+ camera angles, not many.

Since I started going here and there back in the early 2000s there's never really been consistent fan support in the stands. I feel like I could almost always sit anywhere you wanted once you got there

Sorry for the late response...day job gets in the way sometimes.

West Virginia has a great baseball facility, that blows ours out of the water. They just opened their brand-new state of the art hitting and pitching labs, housed in a brand new 8,500 sq foot facility. The price tag on that was nearly $6.5 million. The stadium is just over 10 years old (houses baseball only weight room and larger clubhouse, meeting rooms, and theater) and they continue to improve it. This year, in addition to the $6.5 million hitting and pitching labs, they added a new $550,000 score board/video board. Trust me when I say West Virginia offers players way more than we do, facility wise. And the stadium is really nice.

Cincinatti's facilities and Baylor's facilities are essentially equal. I haven't been up there in a while, so I don't know if they have done any big improvements. But take away the aesthetics and what we offer our players is almost identical. They do have a full visitors clubhouse, which is something Baylor Ballpark doesn't have. Fan offerings are the same, as well. Might actually give them the nod there, just based on the open concourse so you can still kind of see what is going on while getting food/drinks.

Kansas...you are right. Hoglund is the equivalent of a 5A or 6A Texas high school stadium...fan experience, wise, they have big boy score board and VIP/Club seats down the 1st base side that include an indoor dining/large hospitality suite. Player wise, we have a much bigger club house and auxiliary space. Technolgy wise, their hitting lab is newer and more advanced than ours (not a game changer, though).

BUT...the Board of Regents just approved the five-year facilities plan for the university. In that plan $22 million is earmarked for a Hoglund Ballpark renovation, starting in the FY 2027. With the success Coach Fitzgerald is having the Jayhawk Athletic Director is already firing up the PR machine and making public comments about raising additional funds to add to that total.

Look, the bottom line is we have a pretty stadium. But BUBBsos, I think you are like most of the people on this Board, you guys look at our stadium and say, "hey we have a good-looking stadium...we just need to spend a little bit of money, and we will be fine." The problem with that, is THE MAJORITY OF OUR COMPETITION have been spending A LOT of money over the last 10 years and aren't slowing down. Meanwhile, in the big scheme of things we have spent the BARE MINIMUM on our facilities since 1999. We are woefully behind AND it shows in the results.
