WACO, Texas -- Baylor offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital has been named one of 63 nominees for the 2025 Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, it was announced by the Broyles Foundation on Tuesday afternoon.
Baylor’s second-year offensive coordinator, Spavital leads one of the top offensive units in college football. The Bears rank No. 3 in the NCAA in passing offense, while also ranking No. 8 in first-down offense and No. 21 in total offense.
While leading the QBs, Spavital has helped guide senior Sawyer Robertson to a historic season. The Lubbock, Texas, signal caller ranks as the nation’s leader in passing TDs (30), while ranking among the NCAA’s best in points per game (second), points (third), passing yards per game (third), passing yards (fourth), completions per game (fourth) and total offense (eighth).
In addition, Spavital has found a way to showcase his top players, as senior WR Josh Cameron has had an elite season while ranking eighth in BU career history in receptions (167), 10th in single-season history in receptions (66) and 11th in receiving yards in BU career annals (2,181). Cameron’s 817 receiving yards is just shy of the top-12 in single-season history. He has 18 career TDs, ranking 11th best, and ranks 13th best with eight TD grabs in 2025.
Senior Michael Trigg is a finalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end. The Tampa, Fla., native has set program standards for a tight end in career receiving yards, season TD catches, season receiving yards and season receptions. He ranks third nationally among TEs in catches and TD catches and second in receiving yards.
It marks the second straight year Spavital has been a nominee for the Broyles Award.
Baylor (5-6, 3-5 Big 12 Conference) takes on Houston (8-3, 5-3 Big 12) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at McLane Stadium, live on TNT, truTV and HBO Max, as well as on the Baylor Sports Media Network.
