Can't afford conference losses at home, which then require you to steal one on the road. This team is capable of stealing one on the road, but it's clearly not an overly strong team. Unfortunately there are a couple of stat padders on this roster who look good on paper because they pile up stats against weak non-conference opponents but then disappear when the competition steps up.

I'm stating the obvious but this team needs Scott at full health and playing 30+ minutes a game. Was really glad to see Deng step up with a good game (minus the missed FTs). I don't think she's a 20+ scorer every night but if she could give us 10-14 points it would be a significant boost to the overall quality of the team. Hopefully this was the game that will boost her confidence and keep her playing at a high level through conference play.

Totally forgot about this game, which tells where I'm at. Sorry we lost. How was the crowd?

Fontleroy really needs to step it up in big games. She had an awful game - and her shot always seems so flat against the better competition. Zero points. 0-8 FGs. 0 FTs. 3 TOs. 0 assists.

I might be in the minority, but that was also a clear foul on her at the end - slid her hips into Maupin when she should have just gone straight up. Maupin wasn't going to make that shot - just have to stay disciplined on defense - and you would expect Fontleroy to know that at this stage of her career.

Do you call that with 3 seconds left and with it going on all game with no foul called?

How about the bumps on deng driving to the bucket?

Call was bad. Wasn't why BU lost.
21 turnovers
12-18 FT line. Countless missed open looks
Ref blaming is incredibly lame in my opinion

And for all the grief that some posters here give JVG on turnovers, the one I am disappointed in is Buggs in that department. I am starting to cringe every time she ends up bringing the ball down, dribbling into traffic, and some poor decisions on in-bound throws. She is a beast on the glass, but that doesn't extend to her ball handling and decisions making.

Tough one to lose and gives everyone a bad taste heading into Christmas and nothing can be done until Dec 31 and against one of our toughest road games......historically. Although ISU only beat KU by 3 today in Ames.

All things said, if Scott could have played from the start, I don't believe any question, we would have won the game. Sure, you play with what you have, but the heightened expectations for this team this year were a lot around her. We have no one with which to replace her. We are a very different team without her.

The problem with questionable calls at the end of the game is that there is no time to overcome them. We've seen it in college and pros. Its part of the game, but the impact it can have is monumental to your season.

I thought our last play call was excellent. Deng makes that shot far more often than a miss. Tech did a good job of not giving the refs an opportunity to make a call. Just a tough, tough loss.

edit - got my schedule mixed up....our next game is against OSU and then ISU

Agree that the fouls were inconsistent down the stretch, but Bella slid her hips into the body of Maupin. That gets called almost every time, no matter the importance of the situation. And it wasn't necessary.

The reality in WCB this year - there are 3 teams that are at a completely different level than the next 40 teams or so: UCONN, Texas, and S Carolina. Baylor will make the tourney as a 5-7 seed, maybe win a game, two if they gut lucky and T Scott goes off - but the top 3 teams are 30 points better than the other 40.

Many problems with this team, but right at the top of the list is the fact that Fontleroy an DLB have significantly regressed during their time at Baylor. This team will not win if those two don't contribute

Buggs has actually become a beast on the boards from when she came in, but I don't like to see her dribble up court or shoot 3s. Fontleroy is either full on or full off on her shooting. Still think she is an excellent defender. Some athletes reach their peak early and never really progress further. We all thought that Gusters was going to be a difference maker. Kim never did get much of her.

The biggest thing as to whether or not the team wins is whether or not Scott plays. That was the difference make today with her not really being able to play. Have been encouraged with Deng the last couple of games. Her and Scott give us something we have not had......legitimate and consistent 3-point shooting.

I know you have to basically score an extra 10 pts a game to make up for questionable refs but it sucks and quality really should be better. Nothing is worse when it gets one sided at the very end of a close game and poor quality factors in the outcome.

Yes Bella has regressed for sure. And I think Andrews regressed or at least didn't get any better as time when on.

I think the out of the headline story I heard about Sarah was that she never was really healthy. I'm sure someone close to the program could provide more information.

Some thoughts about the game:

1. Although Jana is undersized, she's was the only reliable ball handler today. Every other player who played meaningful minutes is a TO waiting to happen. Jana gets in the passing lanes like no one's business and if she were playing the role she's played the last couple of years - a bench sharpshooter and emergency PG, this team would be a Top 15 team easily. She plays extremely hard and I believe she is trusting that knee more and more. She has much more lateral quickness now than she did at the start of the season. If you had a Chloe Jackson, then you might have a top-10 team.

2. Buggs has to play closer to the bucket. I'm ok with her in the mid-range game but having her out on the perimeter takes her biggest asset away from this team. I don't know if NC has much of a choice right now but the closer Buggs can get to the basket, the better this team plays.

3. Although Abraham is playing better defense, the pick and roll with her is always an...adventure.

4. For years, Bella has benefitted from dribble penetration with a kick-out to her for the 3. She doesn't handle the ball all that well, can't create her own shot, and is playing out of position being closer to the basket. I think teams have figured out how to defend her. Don't leave her alone and her stand-alone 3s disappear from the offense.

5. Deng showed out today but would love to see her stop and pop the mid-range shot after penetration. Several times she dribbled into the forest and got denied.

6. Not having Scott turned this from a 12-point win to a 1-point loss. I hope they take some time bringing her back. Save her for when she's really healthy for the last half of the season. Her minutes need to be limited for the next three weeks. The team will have to take its lumps but with her healthy for the last half of the season and the Big 12 Tournament, this team could make a good run in the postseason.

Some exceptionally questionable (bad) calls late in the game decided it. Tech played very physical and got away with a lot today. That call on Abraham on the perimeter was a phantom call, as she was playing great defense.

Agree with you, except I don't think Scott playing all game would've guaranteed us a win, assuming you're meaning not 100%. There's a reason she didn't, you could tell she was laboring. I'm glad she brought a little bit of a spark but is clearly hurt.

Andrews was hurt and never fully healthy her last 2-3 years. She had foot injury she just never fully recovered from..

Those strings are albatrosses around the neck of the winner side of the streak A big deal is made about them when a game comes up and at some point the string will be broken. But having won that many in a row does nothing to help you win the next one. Just like you can have a coin come up heads 20 times in a row, but the odds of it coming up tails on the next toss is no different that had it been coming up tails for 20 tosses.

A lot of those wins came while Tech was wandering in the wilderness after losing their HOF coach, Sharpe.

I told my wife before the game started, the team that has the ball last will win. Most of our games will be this way this year.

Blackie,

Serious question... I asked Delmar to share some hope, but crickets...

Are we not wandering in the wilderness now? I just don't see it with CNC and the current direction of the program. And yes... I go to games including yesterday's double header. We can't seem to get out of our way from something as big as getting our roster set for the year to something as small running a basic play at the end of the game.
Bearprof
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If BU had the same NIL for WBB as the larger programs, this would make the difference in two starters - a PG and a big, and this team would look very different. Imagine having two our our current starters coming off the bench. That's all that's missing from this team from a personnel perspective. This program is not a dumpster fire, wandering in the wilderness, yadda, yadda, yadda... That's the fine line between our past success without NIL and now with it. I would like to have Bella be able to dribble penetrate to create her own shot, but I don't know that she can. I'd like for Buggs to be able to shoot it consistently from the perimeter, but she can't at present. She's improved her shooting some but not enough to keep defenses from sagging. Having Johnson and Abraham splitting time at the 5 is exactly what should happen. Let Deng and M. Johnson get minutes and improve, rest Scott until she's able to contribute, get Buggs closer to the basket on O, and this team can make some noise come tournament time.

True,

I don't think it is so much of wandering in the wilderness, but going through the ups and downs of trying to recover from the loss of a HOF coach and having to do it now when you have to buy players and deal with the portal. Others who have lost theirs have taken time (UT over 10 years) to get back to where they were. Tennessee, ND, NC, etc. are still not close to where they were. Even UConn is on the clock, IMO. Geno won't be there much longer. If it happened at Tennessee, it can happen at UConn.

I believe some think that because Baylor had a history of winning under KM, there would be no problem. But those recruits came to Baylor because of the coach, not what was on the front of their jersey. The magnet was the coach, not the school. I know many years ago, I starting thinking about what Baylor would do after KM retired. How could it continue under a "normal" coach....not one that had won multiple championships at a school that previously hadn't won much of anything.

We might have come up with a better plan if the departure was planned like at Tennessee, but even with their advanced notice and their legacy they still are not where they were and have had up and down seasons.

I am concerned about Baylor's future, not because of who is currently coaching, but whether we can commit the monetary resources to attract the kind of players we would need to even approach our past levels. And when UT and OU left, those dollars just got bigger because of the second-rate perception of our conference. When Kim was here we didn't have to worry about portals and NIL and while our conference was not considered top notch, it still had blue-blood names in it. We don't have the bright lights to compete with the SEC and B1G

I mentioned in another thread I could go into why I think expectations of Baylor ever getting back to where we were are conditionally unrealistic because of how the landscape has changed. But that is a very long story.

So, I don't think we are in the "wilderness". I believe we are going through the reality pains of losing KM. You can't just lose a HOF coach, especially in the unexpected manner and the underclassmen roster situation we had at the time and expect to keep the train rolling along as if nothing had happened. That has been shown over and over by other programs experiencing that situation.

We could have hired another elite coach (highly unlikely any would come), but there really are only a handful out there....and even doing that guarantees no success as to whether they could translate their success to another place. UT tried with Goestenkors and that was a disaster.

For me, I try not to worry about comparisons to the past, which I think are not only unfair, but not realistic and realize that we are not the first elite program to have to go through this. Actually, I think we have done pretty good so far just keeping our tournament streak alive. I hope that continues as we try to find our way in this new world of NIL and free agency. UT, ND, and Tennessee all missed the NCAA tourney at some point after losing their HOF coach.

This is already too long and doesn't even go into how we got established under Kim and more into how this new landscape has affected us and our peers in the XII.

Concerning you comment about the last play. Perhaps you could see something at the game, but from my TV, it looked like a pretty good call. Deng just missed the shot. She was right there. I don't know how you could ask for more.

Merry Christmas to you!

And wrist. That affected her shooting considerably. Injuries kept her from progressing

Bella has been the disappointment to me. Except for defense, she has played well vs inferior teams and disappeared offensively versus better competition. She has tried to add the bully ball component to her game but she has never finished at the basket at a high rate so I think the upside there is limited. I do think teams have learned how to play her. I hope Deng gets more of her minutes going forward unless we need a defensive stopper, then Bella is the one. However, she has to be smarter about her end of shot clock defense. She has hurt us there several times including this game.
