BREAKING: Baylor lands grad transfer CB Derrek Thomas

SicEm365 has confirmed that Temple grad transfer cornerback Derrek Thomas (6-3, 193) will play his final season of football in Waco for the Baylor Bears.

Thomas, a former wide receiver who made the transition to defensive back, made the move to defense at the request of now Baylor assistant coach Fran Brown following his true freshman season.

A source close to the Baylor program told SicEm365 that Thomas is viewed as a potential draft pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Thomas totaled 35 tackles, 13 passes defended and 1 interception in 20 games played for the Owls at corner in 2016 and 2017.

After a promising sophomore season in 2016 where he totaled 29 tackles and 7 passes defended under Matt Rhule and Brown, Thomas was limited throughout the 2017 season where he played in only seven games as a junior for the Owls.

I'm fine with this, as experienced depth is never a bad thing, so long as Rhule doesn't play favorites.

Thomas' learning curve will be short as he has already played in this system. His size makes it possible for him to be a replacement for Blake Lynch, if Blake is really moving to safety this off-season. Thomas gives Baylor a tall cornerback to match up with those really tall receivers in the Big 12.

Baylor used Lynch for these matchups this fall. Without Thomas, Baylor would have been matching up 5'9 to 5'11 corners with those 6'5" receivers. This gives the Bears a lot of flexibility in their substitution patterns. It's a good get, despite not having many openings left.

Respect the game.

Welcome Derrek!

As a grad transfer, he is eligible to play immediately, correct? He would be a junior, no? Also, how many years does he have left (assuming the 2019 NFL dream does not materialize... although it would be great if it does!)

Available to play immediately. He has one year left to play since he already had a redshirt year.

Just because you're tall doesn't mean you can cover. He better be a 4.4 or faster to covers these Big 12 receivers cause height doesn't mean anything.

If y'all didnt know we already have the fastest corner in the Big 12 on our team that played well against TCU after coming back from a near season injury. More depth is good tho.

Just because you're fast doesn't mean you can cover either ...
