Baylor Football Recruiting

It's time for Baylor fans to recognize Fran Brown before it's too late

If you know me, you will know that I truly believe that the majority of college football games are won and lost on the recruiting trail for all programs across the country. The bluebloods sign the best of the best and the other successful programs around the country find prospects who fit their system and who they believe they can and will develop into successful players.

That's how it's always been and will always be. Fortunately for Baylor, they are located in one of the most talent-rich states in America and within a short drive of Dallas, Houston and the numerous small towns East Texas and finding talent to fill a top 25 class isn't an issue.

He really pushed for a close, real relationship, but he was real and just was really cool and always did his best to keep in contact with me and my family.
- Connor Galvin,  2018 Signee

Also fortunate for Baylor is that they have one of the fastest rising recruiters in America plugged into their Assistant Head Coach position and coaching the defensive backs. That man is Fran Brown, the recruiting ace who had a hand in the recruitment of 12 (and probably more) of Baylor's 21 signees in the 2018 class.

Make no mistake, Baylor's entire staff pulls their own weight, but Brown is being noticed around the country for his ability to be an on-the-field coach and the vein that brings the lifeblood that is high school talent to the program.

Now it's time for Baylor fans to understand what they have in Brown and cherish his abilities as long as they have it.

"I know people say don't go to a school for the coach, but I've made it clear that the coaching staff had a lot to do with my decision, especially Coach Fran," Baylor signee and early enrollee JT Woods‍ told SicEm365.

"He is one of those coaches that is really involved in his players' life on and, most importantly, off the field, and those are the types of coaches that build men of character, not just football players. I wanted to play for someone that was going to mold me into a great man, not just a great football player."

A safety, Woods won't learn directly under Brown when he arrives in Waco later this week, but that's the case for most all of the prospects that Brown recruited. He had a hand in the recruitment of defensive lineman Joshua Landry‍, quarterback Gerry Bohanon‍ and even running back Craig Williams‍ to only name a few.

One of the biggest that Brown was able to secure not only once but twice was Miami, Florida wide receiver Tyquan Thornton‍. Brown and the rest of the coaching staff identified Thornton as an elite wide receiver when the 6-foot-3, 165-pound prospect only held an offer from Appalachian State. Thornton committed to the Bears shortly after before offers began to roll in from the likes of Florida, Georgia and Miami.

Thornton opted to open up his recruitment and eventually gave his pledge to the Gators, his childhood favorite. It was Brown's persistence and faith in Thornton in the months after, however, that eventually led to the four-star signing with Baylor in the early signing period.

"Coach Fran meant a lot to me in this recruiting process because he saw what other coaches didn't see in me," Thornton said. "I have so much respect for him."

So what's the key?

Brown will be the first to tell you he's never been too high on playing the game within the game that is social media when it comes to college football recruiting. He's more concerned about developing relationships, building trust, and turning great prospects into great humans first and great players second.

Offensive lineman Connor Galvin‍ of Katy who committed to the Bears over offers from TCU, Florida, UCLA and Texas Tech among others, said it was all about Brown's efforts to stay in touch with his family from the start to finish of his recruitment.

"He was awesome," Galvin said. "He really pushed for a close, real relationship, but he was real and just was really cool and always did his best to keep in contact with me and my family."

Brown has made efforts to praise head coach Matt Rhule for taking him under his wing early in his career so it shouldn't be a surprise that what is being done by Brown is being taught from the top.

Fran Brown: Matt Rhule believed in me

“The first thing I’d say if you really kind of find out what a coaching staff is like when you de-commit from a school and how they handle you. One thing you hear a lot of our players say in the recruiting process is we talk a lot about who you are and having a relationship and being a family and caring about who you are beyond just football."

So now when a fan of one of Baylor's opponents ask you how Baylor has pulled of the "recruiting miracles" of the 2017 and 2018 classes you have the specific answers. It's about relationships built on a solid foundation that will last.

And it's about having Fran Brown on the coaching staff.

Before it's too late? Is he leaving Baylor or something?

yea, what does this "too late" thing? Do you anticipate him leaving after someone else recognizes his ability and comes after him? It sounds like he has a very strong relationship with Rhule. so we just need to pay him well and he will stay $$$$$$

If of course they turn it around and win.

I don't get this article at all. Coach Brown seems like a good recruiter and a good guy but the whole tone of the article is really weird.

As mentioned above, why might it become too late to appreciate him?

Who is the intended audience? The article reads as if it is addressed to CMR or Brown. How come makes such a concerted effort to suck up to the coaching staff with stuff like these:

"Brown has made efforts to praise head coach Matt Rhule for taking him under his wing early in his career so it shouldn't be a surprise that what is being done by Brown is being taught from the top." And

"Make no mistake, Baylor's entire staff pulls their own weight . . ."

Seems to me that the whole of BU promoted media has turned into a bunch of delusional propaganda.

It's time to get to know wide recievers coach Bob Bicknell before it is too late:

https://www.cincyjungle.com/2018/1/6/16857720/bengals-coach-defensive-line-wide-receiver-bob-bicknell

The Cincinnati Bengals are looking for a new defensive line coach and are interviewing the experienced Bob Bicknell for the team's vacancy at wide receiver, according to the Sporting News Alex Marvez.
Marvez tweets that defensive line coach Jacob Burney, who joined the Bengals in 2016 (when most of the defensive coaches were replaced), won't return in 2017; it's unclear if that decision was Burney's but it's safe to say that his contract, like most assistants from the 2017 staff, had likely expired.
With names like Geno Atkins, 29 quarterback sacks over the last three seasons, and Carlos Dunlap, Cincinnati's defensive line vacancy is rather desirable. With Paul Guenther leaving for Oakland, any defensive signings may hold off until a new defensive coordinator is found.

As for Bicknell, Cincinnati has been conducting a search for a new wide receivers coach after James Urban accepted a coaching vacancy in Baltimore, reuniting with John Harbaugh and Marty Mornhinweg. Bicknell coached Baylor's wide receivers in 2017, and has also coached wide receivers for the 49ers, Eagles, and Bills.
Before that, he coached tight ends for the Bills and Chiefs, and was also an offensive line coach for the Chiefs, Temple University, and various NFL Europe squads.
The only confirmed coaches on Cincinnati's 2018 roster are head coach Marvin Lewis, offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons, running backs coach Kyle Caskey, and tight ends coach Jon Hayes.
Cincinnati reportedly interviewed Teryl Austin for their vacant defensive coordinator position; the Bengals will not confirm this until the vacancy is filled.

Temple has its 3rd vacancy in 5 years. Looking for a new HC gets tiring. Fran Brown coached at Temple under Rhule and its widely believed at Temple that Fran would eventually come back to be its HC. He grew up in Camden, coached in S. NJ. He has tremendous alumni support from within the Temple community and a large number of former players have already expressed there support for his return. Really just depends on how Matt Rhule has been preparing him as a coach and if he's ready to be a HC. Temple has a team poised to compete for an AAC Championship next season so the thinking is we should have other coaches like Lance Leipold, Josh Gattis, and others interested if they want to springboard to a P5 gig. Also some support for Ed Foley who has been with the program for a decade to be promoted from within. DC Thacker is also on the short list but may follow Collins to GT.

But as of right now, Fran is probably the early favorite on the outside looking in.

Temple has officially lost HC Geoff Collins to Georgia Tech. There is a groundswell of support to hire Fran Brown from current and former Temple players. Sean Chandler, an undrafted NY Giant tweeted today he would write a check for $20,000 if Temple hired Brown. Probably peanuts at Baylor but Ive never seen a former Temple player publicly express that monetary support for a hire

Fran Brown will interview at Temple tomorrow. As stated previously, on the outside looking in he is a favorite. Heavy support from alumni/former players as well as HS coaches in PA and SNJ. Our AD has been 4/4 with HC hires so general consensus is whoever he chooses is ready. That's probably the only thing that I can think of that is holding Fran back. He lacks DC/OC experience.

Reports suggest Temple is looking to wrap things up by Wednesday or Thursday.

Good luck to him in the interview. All coaches want to be a head coach so I hope he gets his chance and does well.
