Robert Griffin III Expresses Interest in Baylor Job, Offers Coaching Candidates
Less than a day after Baylor fired head football coach Dave Aranda, 2011 Heisman Trophy winner and Baylor Hall of Fame quarterback Robert Griffin III said he was interested in taking the helm at his alma mater.
"If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn't just respectable on the football field, but one the fans can be proud of, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor," Griffin III said in a Monday interview on ‘The Dan Patrick Show.’
Griffin III led Baylor to a 10-3 record and an Alamo Bowl victory in 2011, helping lay the foundation for three Big 12 titles over the next decade, including Aranda’s 2021 conference championship.
“I’ve talked with the athletic director, Doug McNamee, who’s a guy who knows what it looks like to win at Baylor and knows how you have to win at Baylor and recruit to Baylor to make those things happen,” Griffin III said.
Griffin III, however, currently works as a college football commentator for FOX Sports and has no previous coaching experience. He also offered a short list of candidates he’d like to see leading the Bears next fall.
“Outside of myself, I would also advocate for Spencer Danielson, the head coach at Boise State,” Griffin III said. “I think he is a top-notch guy and top-notch coach. He knows how to win. I also think Jeff Traylor at UTSA is a great option. A dark horse would be Lincoln Riley from USC. I know he’s got his experience at Oklahoma, and obviously what’s going on at USC, but when you talk about people who know how to recruit and score points in a big way, which is what Baylor fans are used to when we’re winning.”
McNamee, in his first year as Baylor’s athletic director, is leading the search to replace Aranda, who went 40-40 over six-plus seasons in Waco. It remains to be seen whether Griffin III will garner serious consideration for the job.
