Big 12 Media Days: Baylor's first depth chart of 2018 | Two Bears leave program

FRISCO, Texas - Baylor senior Josh Malin (6-6, 301) is listed as the starting left tackle for the Bears according to the released depth chart and season preview at Big 12 Media Days on Monday in Frisco.

Malin, a tight end from 2014-2016, moved to the offense line as a junior and started twice in the 2017 season against Liberty and TCU.

The inclusion of Malin at the starting position comes as a bit of a surprise as Clemson transfer Jake Fruhmorgen, an eight-game starter at right tackle for the National Champions in 2015 as a sophomore, was the starting left tackle for the Bears in the Green and Gold in April.

Malin sat out of all spring activities while recovering from an injury.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is set to speak with the media on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m.

Offensive line depth chart

Left Tackle Josh Malin (6-6, 301, SR) Jake Fruhmorgen (6-6, 293, JR)
Left Guard Xavier Newman (6-3, 305, SO) Henry Klinge (6-5, 293, RSFr)
Center Sam Tecklenburg (6-4, 306, JR) Ryan Miller (6-2, 290, SO)
Right Guard Blake Blackmar (6-5, 326, SR) Christian Beard (6-3, 298, SR)
Right Tackle Patrick Lawrence (6-6, 311, SR) Eleasah Anderson (6-4, 306, RSFr)

This is surprising. I am wondering if this is designed by Rhule and Company to motivate Jake. Not that Jake isn't motivated, but to push a good player from good to greatness.

So all I've heard for months now is how great the Clemson transfer is and is gonna be, and it turns out he's not even good enough to beat out Josh Malin?

Maybe this is one of those 'Fruhmorgen is more talented but Malin has played harder' sort of things.

Or, maybe Rhule has changed his strategy to preferring the upper classmen if at all possible.

I think Malin is just showing up and looking like a Big 12 left tackle. He has grown into his frame and developed into being a legit LT, showed up big against the best pass rusher they faced all last season when he was forced into action. I think he's just a damn good player and there's a real competition for that spot.

Yep. Heard it about Hurd and the kid from Ennis, the latter who isn't even starting. Let em play them then tell me how great the are on the field.

I'm happy all starters are over 300 pounds

I really hope this is not another "Anu Solomon us better than Zach Smith--AND Charlie Brewer--moment"!

Lockhart may be sitting behind Roberts this year, but next year opposing O linemen better watch out for Lockhart in his senior season!

Some of you guys put WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY too much stock in a pre-camp depth chart. Then again, a lot of you clowns are just looking for things to ***** about.

No doubt a pre-camp depth chart is beneficial to the players, but why publish it?

It is.

To be fair, that may have actually been true when they made the decision, but then Solomon got a concussion early against UTSA and was a shadow of the player he was even just a week before that.

This is true and I've said it on this and other boards many times. pre-camp, Spring camp, and sometimes even fall camp depth charts are pretty useless. Even gameday charts can be full of bull and errors.

But I do think Malin is a good player, and I'm looking forward to seeing just how good.
