WACO, Texas – Baylor Football announced today it will outfit the majority of its football roster with the VICIS ZERO1 helmet during the 2018 football season, signaling an increased commitment to player safety by the Bears.

The ZERO1 is designed to reduce impact forces with a highly engineered structure that differs from traditional football helmets. The ZERO1 has a deformable outer shell and a unique columnar layer designed to slow impact forces like a car bumper.

In the 2018 VIRGINIA TECH® HELMET RATINGS™, which rates helmets based on the impact frequency and severity observed in high school and collegiate play, the ZERO1 rated #1 and was awarded the highest available “5 STAR” rating. The ZERO1 also ranked first in the NFL / NFLPA’s 2018 Helmet Laboratory Testing Performance, earning the top spot for the second year in a row.

Baylor University is demonstrating its commitment to player safety by providing its student-athletes with the best testing equipment, making a customized ZERO1 available to anyone on the team. The Bears will be one of the first college programs to outfit the majority of the roster with the ZERO1.

“We are thrilled to partner with an industry leader like VICIS,” Baylor head coach Matt Rhule said. “The helmet was offered to our entire team and 80 of our 115 players chose to wear the cutting-edge ZERO1, the most of any NCAA Division I team in the country. We will spare no expense in providing our players with the best and safest equipment on the market and this is another step towards that goal.”

The announcement comes on the heels of the Big 12’s partnership with VICIS to further educate football players on the latest safety advancements in sports equipment while providing access to top-ranked football helmets for players across all 10 Big 12 teams.

"Our team is thrilled to bring the ZERO1's breakthrough protective technology to Baylor University this season," said Dave Marver, VICIS CEO and co-founder. "We are excited to help Coach Rhule and Baylor’s football program protect their athletes and elevate their performance."

80 out of 115 players chose the new helmet. For safety reasons, why not all 115. Do I smell some legal problems in the future? Are the helmets to small or are some of the players heads too big? Why not all issued the new helmet?

Maybe it will help, but I still think this is not the right approach. A helmet design to reduce had injuries should be geared more towards deflecting energy away from the center of the head rather than absorbing it. A bumper can only do so much. Maybe it's a better bumper, but I believe the difference can only be minimal. I fear that having a softer outer shell will only allow impacts to impress and stick longer and focus more rather than deflect force away.

Maybe, lucky helmets are lucky? Don't wan't bad juju when you go into a game.

I dunno. Some folks are superstitious about those sorts of things.

The Zero1 must have been named after the Baylor's win total in 2017.

I think i read somewhere that this helmet is considerably heavier (20% ?) than other helmets, thus it will take some getting used to.

That's good, but the majority of injuries are due to the internal impact of the brain against the inner skull. No helmet will ever fix that, as it's caused entirely by the rapid deceleration of a player being tackled, etc. Body stops moving, brain keeps moving forward in its little cushion of CNS, impacts skull.... brain damage.

Certainly a legal issue. Helmet choices must be users decision, cause if a player doesn't like the helmet chosen for him by an equipment manager, and he gets hurt by it, then he has a legal issue for the injury. If player selects his own helmet, then he can't blame school.

Wish "can't blame school" was that simple. The equipment manager scenario was definitely something I did not know. When I played we were told to cough, equipment manager handed equipment (leather helmets with no face mask), paid our $5.00 insurance premium and hike.

Have we gone back to stripeless on the traditional gold helmet?

It appears that gold helmets will not be worn this season.

I saw a presentation for this helmet on Saturday. The outside material is not the deflecting part of the technology
This helmet has none of the traditional air pocket cushions inside
Instead it has a column maze ( my description not there's) that is designed to deflect the energy
This helmet supposedly when tested by Virginia tech laboratory finished first on collision tests

Black, green, and white have been featured in promotionals by the university and manufacturer. No response to questions about gold yet, hence it "appears" to be out.

Hopefully, an "according to" will come soon from Baylor to confirm the absence or presence of gold.
No Longer Gold

We need to do all we can to try to "influence" that announcement.

Gold is the ONLY color helmet that we should have. To be without it is just asinine.

Why does it seem like the administration is so adamant about fighting the fans on this?

The "yellow" needs to be gone, the arched "BAYLOR" needs to be gone. Embrace our damn legacy brand....I just don't get it.

At least we appear to be keeping the "BU" logo?

Hell if I know. Just thinking of the common names for the past couple of incarnations of gold Baylor helmets.

Probably not official Pantones ... do I have to surrender my diploma to the color authorities? (Read jokingly)

If 300 were bought and 80 kids wanted them, then 60 are leftover. I haven't seen a gold that matches from the website.

I saw on their website that they can do custom colors for the helmet. So I think the gold will be in.

So isnt the entire Big 12 making (or essentially have the option) the change to this helmet...
