Grobe: Freshman Johnson could see time behind Lewis

With the chances for true freshman nose tackle Bravvion Roy to play in Baylor's Homecoming tilt against Kansas on Saturday not looking good, one of Baylor's four true freshman who has not seen action this fall could have his number called according to Baylor head coach Jim Grobe on Wednesday.

“I think one of the things, Micheal Johnson might work his way in,” Grobe said.

With sophomore Ira Lewis to likely receive the start at defensive tackle, the depth at the position is very thin. Grobe stated that the high number of snaps in the previous two games for the defense was forcing the staff to make a a decision regarding Johnson's redshirt.

“One of the things we need to make sure is to make sure that we are fresh and that Ira is fresh," Grobe said.

"We’ve been playing a lot of snaps on defense. Over 100 in the Oklahoma State game, and then Iowa State did some good things to us and then kept us on the field more than we wanted.”

Roy is expected to return in Baylor's next game against Texas on Oct. 29, but the need for Johnson could be needed throughout the remainder of the season and not only against the Jayhawks.

“I think one of the keys is being able to rotate guys around and stay fresh.”

Through five games, Baylor's defense is giving up 174.8 yards rushing per outing, good enough for fourth in the conference.

A product of Misouri City (TX) Hightower High School, Johnson (6-1, 270) was a two-time district MVP as a junior and senior. He held 20 offers including Washington, Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern and Texas Tech.
