Projecting where the Baylor Bears will bowl in 2018

With a sixth win comes bowl eligibility and with bowl eligibility comes the excitement of projecting which bowl the Bears will play in this winter.

After the final regular season games of the season on Saturday, a day that included a Baylor victory over Texas Tech, experts all over online outlets have released where they think the Bears will play their bowl game and who their opponent will be.

Jerry Palm of CBSSports believes the Bears will face San Diego State in the Cheez-It Bowl located in Tempe, Arizona on Dec. 26. The Aztecs finished the season 7-4 with a signature win over Arizona State of the PAC-12.

CollegeFootballNews.com also projects the Bears to play SDSU in the Cheez-It Bowl.

SBNation’s Jason Kirk has Baylor facing Army in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 22 in Fort Worth at TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium. Through 11 games in 2018, Army is 9-2 including winning their last eight games. They finish the regular season on Dec. 8 in their annual matchup with Navy.

What would possibly be the most convienient location for Baylor fans, Eric Single of SI.com has Baylor slotted to play Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl in Houston, Texas on Dec. 27.  Texas A&M finished the regulard season 8-4 including a win over LSU to close the season in a thrilling seven overtime game.

Another possible landing spot for the Bears would be the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee according to Bryan Fischer of NBC Sports. Set for Dec. 31, 2018, Fischer believes Auburn would the opponent for Baylor.

Official announcements for bowl destinations and opponents will take play next Sunday, Dec. 2.

Baylor is 4-3 in bowl games dating back to 2010 with wins over Washington (2011), UCLA (2012), North Carolina (2015) and Boise State (2016). The three losses came to Illinois (2010), UCF (2013) and Michigan State (2014).

I'm a little confused on how this works. The Bears are finishing as #6 in the Big 12. The #6 Big 12 team automatically goes to the Cheez-It bowl. If OU goes to the playoffs, everyone under them moves up one slot, which would put us in the Liberty Bowl. What circumstances could put us in the Armed Forces Bowl (which is for the #7 Big 12 team) or the Texas Bowl (which is for the #4 Big 12 Team)?

As I understand it, each team has a choice to accept the proffered bowl or take another offer they like. It is therefore possible that the conference will sound out each team prior to saying who gets what.

You say we are #6. What is the order are the other teams?

Texas Christian is ranked ahead of us, right?

What bowl is matched to each number ranking? Are the bowls bound to those numbers?

The bowls pick in order but can pick any b12 team. Look at the b12 site it's very clear. #6 team does not automatically go to the #6 bowl.

Order doesn't matter much after the playoff and New Years auto bids are filled. From then on it's like a draft. The Alamo gets first choice of the remaining teams, and so on.

Anyone thinking we will play aggy is high.

Typically, the bowls select in order of their finish in the conference. For example, if Texas was the #7 team in the conference after the playoffs and Sugar Bowl, the next bowl in theory could select Texas however, this would get everyone in the conference (except Texas) pissed off that Texas and Oklahoma would always go to a "good" bowl. That's why it doesn't happen. Sometimes a similar record 6-6 team or 7-5 team may get flipped due to location, etc. Baylor is currently in the 6 position which would be the Cheez it Bowl. If Oklahoma makes the playoffs, then the Big 12 would have no representative for the 7th bowl as all bowl eligible teams from the conference would be in the playoffs or 6 higher bowls. Not an expert so if I'm wrong on any of this let me know.

BeanEater is correct.. Standings don't matter. Bowls pick in their respective order whoever they want. They're trying to sell tickets so they're trying to get an attractive matchup.

Stefano - You and BeanEater are "technically" correct however, bowls typically go with the standings in order unless 1) the teams that would be matched up have already played or 2) Location to the bowl. I can't remember in the past 20 years of a team being picked for a bowl more than a place or two difference than their finish in their respective conference. So yes while they can technically pick the team they want, they usually don't deviate much if at all from the standings.

It's possible that a 5-win team can be offered a bowl bid based on academic standings if there aren't enough 6-win teams to fill all the bowls. With that said, maybe you already looked at the remaining Big12 (5-win) teams and know they wouldn't be eligible based on that (I didn't look).

Pillbug - No I have not. Usually they just go to another conference but sure, they can do that. I'm not sure what the rules are and if all 6 win teams in the country have to be selected or not for a bowl prior to going to a 5 win team. I know a lot of schools will decline a bowl if they only have five wins.

Baylor won't be playing A&M in the Houston bowl game. A&M will be in the second tier of bowls for the SEC, such as Gator or Citrus.

Most of the projections I've seen say that there will likely be a couple of 6 win teams excluded from the bowls; so no 5 win teams will make it.

Liberty or Texas Bowl please. But no matter what game we're in, just win baby.

There are 78 total bowl slots and 82 eligible teams (6-6 or better) with Virginia Tech likely to be the 83rd. No 5-7 teams get in this time around.

A bowl in Fort Worth is probably the only one I could make due to family/travel/xmas plans. I would love to be able to take my Marine 0331 to the Armed forces bowl

If OU loses and we could play Temple lol

That would be so awkward.

Doesn't the SEC pick the teams for its bowl game as opposed to the Bowl game picking them? That year that UT played in the Texas Bowl, I seem to remember the SEC keeping the Aggies from playing and sent them to another bowl game. Obviously the Texas Bowl would salivate over a UT/TAMU match-up. And one would think that a BU/TAMU match-up would be of a similar interest.

Assuming that the SEC allows Aggie to play in the Texas Bowl, I could see the Bowl picking BU over ISU and TCU.
Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

aggy 8-4 and BU 6-6 - how is that a good match up? I would love to beat aggy but I don't think we would stand a chance this year.

Based on this ^ plus what someone said in another post about a staff member saying we'll be in the Texas Bowl vs Auburn, I think we'll be in the Texas Bowl vs Auburn. I think it would be great!
