WACO, Texas — The Baylor Lady Bears defeated Kansas on Wednesday evening to secure at least a share of the 2019 Big 12 Championship at the Ferrell Center. The 80-40 victory moved Kim Mulkey’s squad to 24-1 overall and 14-0 in Big 12 play on the season.

Four Baylor players scored in double figures on the evening including Juicy Landrum (20), Kalani Brown (11), Lauren Cox (11) and Chloe Brown (10).

Baylor will resume Big 12 play when they face No. 20 Iowa State on the road Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT. The Lady Bears defeated ISU 84-69 in Waco back on Jan. 23.

BAYLOR HEAD COACH KIM MULKEY

On holding Kansas’s offense...

“Well, they make 14 3’s a game, so that was a big emphasis. At halftime, they had two. At the end of the game, they had three. We knew they could score on the perimeter. I thought that it was very obvious we were missing shots tonight. You’re not going to hit all your shots, and that’s why you’ve got to play good defense. At the end, I was so proud of those five freshmen. I was challenging them each, and it’s time to turn the heat up on them. They’ve got to stay focused. They’ve got to make plays. They just played hard the last five minutes of the game.

On Kalani Brown scoring 2,000 career points...

“I thought it was only appropriate [Lauren] Cox was the one to give her the pass. I was aware she needed seven [more], and I thought part of that was Kalani just standing there and letting them double or triple team her. We’ve got to figure out how to get her more touches, and we did.”

On how it never gets old to win the Big 12 Championship...

“If it gets old, I need to get out. Then it’d be time to retire. I don’t want it to get old for the fans. I don’t want anybody to ever take this for granted. It is so hard. Sometimes because of the talent we have, the kids I get to coach, they make it look easy. But it’s not easy. We just have to keep feeding this monster. This is one of our goals, but we have bigger goals down the road. It’s going to be a challenge to win these next four games. We’re playing three of the four teams that are tied for second place. It’s not going to be an easy road.”

BAYLOR SOPHOMORE GUARD DIDI RICHARDS

On how it feels to be a Big 12 champion...
“It’s great. It never feels real until it really happens, so I love this feeling. I hope to do it two more times.”

BAYLOR FRESHMAN FORWARD NALYSSA SMITH

On how it feels to be a Big 12 champion...
“It feels great. I’ve never cut a net before, so for my first time to be here, it’s an honor. It’s just a blessing.”

First double-figure scoring game for her.
