Within 72 hours of first contact, RJ Sneed knew Baylor was for him
When the calendar flipped over to 2017, Cypress Ranch wide receiver RJ Sneed was anticipating leaving the state of Texas to enroll at Ole Miss. Less than one week into the new year, though, Sneed’s plans changed completely when Baylor assistant coach Shawn Bell reached out to him.
Roughly 72 hours after Bell made contact, Sneed posted his commitment to the Bears on Twitter.
“They contacted me Thursday night and made it known they wanted me," Sneed said. "Coach Bell was the first person I was in touch with, and then Coach (Matt) Lubick just made it known that if I come in and compete that I can get early playing time, and I think that would catch anyone’s attention."

“The reason I was going to Ole Miss was for the coaches, and my recruiting coach left,” he explained. “You don’t leave Texas for a school, you leave it because you make a relationship with a coach. My family’s just happy that I’m staying in state and they can come to all my games.”
If you ask Sneed to evaluate his own abilities as a player, he points to his ability to read defenses as a particular strength, along with his “open field play ability, my hands, and getting separation.”
As he prepares to begin his college career in what would have been the second semester of his final year at high school, RJ is also acutely aware of areas in which he can grow as a player.
“I just need to continue improving my route running and work on being patient, I would say,” Sneed said.
According to RJ, the Baylor coaching staff targeted him in large part because of his explosive playing style, and for his versatility as a player. “They like that I can play inside and outside receiver, and that I can return punts.”
Like the rest of Baylor’s small-but-growing 2017 recruiting class, Sneed understands how important of a role he can play in getting other prospects to commit to Baylor. His first plan of attack is to try to recruit his Cypress Ranch teammate, linebacker Amaud Willis-Dalton, to join him.
As an early enrollee, Sneed should be on campus in time for the upcoming weekend’s influx of official visit. “I should have everything finalized by this afternoon,” he told SicEm365 on Monday morning.
