Baylor RB Sqwirl Williams tears ACL and MCL, will miss remainder of the season

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda announced on Monday morning during the Big 12 media call that freshman running back Craig “Sqwirl” Williams will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a significant knee injury on Saturday against Iowa State. 

Williams suffered an ACL and MCL tear against the Cyclones.

The devastating injury came the same day that Williams received his first career start after signing with Baylor in the 2018 class. Williams received two carries as a freshman in 2018, one going for a score in a victory over Kansas State. Williams received a medical redshirt for the 2019 season after suffering a minor knee injury forced him to miss the offseason.

On his eighth carry of the first half against the Cylcones, Williams, Baylor’s leading rusher through five games, planted to make a cut on the natural turf at Jack Trice Stadium and his knee buckled. It was a non-contact injury. 

Williams’ season comes to after rushing for 197 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. He has rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. 

Baylor will turn to seniors John Lovett and Trestan Ebner to receive the bulk of the carries moving forward while redshirt freshman Qualan Jones and true freshman Taye McWilliams will be next in line. Jones and McWilliams each saw action against the Cyclones on Saturday. 

Lovett did not travel with the team to Ames after suffering a concussion the prior week against TCU. Ebner had five offensive touches for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Cyclones.
