Reports: Baylor to hire offensive coordinator on Monday
According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Baylor head coach Dave Aranda will hire BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes to the same position. The deal is expected to be hired on Monday according to Thamel.
A native of Garland, Texas, the 52-year has spent the previous three seasons with the Cougars after spending five seasons at LSU (2014-2017) as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator.
Under Grimes, BYU’s 2020 offense averaged 43.5 points per game, 332.1 yards passing and 190.3 yards rushing per game. BYU’s 5.39 yards per carry ranked No. 15 nationally while their 10.6 yards per pass attempt ranked No. 3. The points per game ranked No. 3 nationally behind only Kent State and Alabama.
Under the direction of Grimes, BYU improved in each of his three seasons in terms of output. Prior to his arrival in 2017, the Cougars averaged 17.1 points per game. In his first season the Cougars improved to 27.2 points per game in 2018 and again to 28.5 points in 2018 before averaging 43.5 points in 2020.
Prior to his stop at LSU, Grimes held the offensive line position at Auburn (2009-2012). Grimes helped lead the Tigers to an SEC and National Championship in the 2010 season. His unit paved the way for Auburn running backs and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton to a 6.12 yards per carry average on the season.
From 2007 to 2008 Grimes was the Associate Head Coach at the University of Colorado while also serving as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator. He began his coaching career at Hardin-Simmons (1998-1999) as the offensive line coach and had stops at Boise State (2000), Arizona State (2001-2003) and BYU (2004-2006) prior to arriving at Colorado.
