Baylor Baseball Bounces Back with 9-3 Win Over No. 21 OSU on Sunday

STILLWATER, Okla. – After a five-hour rain delay, Baylor bounced back in a big way after defeating No. 21 Oklahoma State, 9-3, on Sunday night at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla to win the final game of the three-game series.

FRIDAY - Oklahoma State 8, Baylor 7 (11)

After trailing 6-1 through six innings, Baylor baseball battled back to tie the game in the eighth but ultimately fell to No. 21 Oklahoma State, 8-7, in 11 innings on Friday night at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The Bears (29-15, 9-10 Big 12) will look to bounce back against the Cowboys (29-15-1, 11-11 Big 12) on Saturday night.

BU got on the board first after second-year freshman Kyle Nevin doubled in the second inning to set up runners on second and third with no outs. The Bears scored one run in the frame following a Davion Downey ground out. The Cowboys responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to make it 1-1.

The Cowboys put up a four-spot in the fourth and tacked on another run in the fifth to go up 6-1.

Baylor responded in a big way with four runs of its own in the sixth inning. After a Nevin walk and true freshman Alex Gonzales single through the right side, junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo singled to center to trim the deficit to 6-2. Two batters later, second-year freshman Jared McKenzie used a bloop double to score two more. Second-year freshman Tre Richardson picked up an RBI with a single through the right side to close the gap to 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, OSU added a run on a Baylor error to go up 7-5. The Bears knotted things up in the top of the eighth after two walks and an infield single loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore Antonio Valdez reached on a hard-hit ball to first base to make it 7-7.

The two sides held each other scoreless until the bottom of the 11th where the Cowboys used a sacrifice fly to walk it off.

Baylor reliever Jacob Ashkinos (3-1) was tabbed with his first loss of the season, while OSU reliever Trevor Martin (3-0) earned the win.


SATURDAY - Oklahoma State 3, Baylor 1

 Baylor fell to No. 21 Oklahoma State, 3-1, on Saturday night at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The Bears (29-16, 9-11 Big 12) will look to avoid the sweep to the Cowboys (30-15-1, 12-11 Big 12) on Sunday.

Baylor struck first in the top of the third after true freshman Jacob Schoenvogel got on with a single to left field. In the next at-bat, sophomore Jack Pineda doubled off the wall in left center to score Schoenvogel and put the Bears up 1-0.

The Cowboys answered back in the bottom half of the frame after scoring two runs on a two-out error. OSU plated another in the frame to make in 3-1, with all the runs being unearned.

The Bears had a chance to cut into the lead in the fourth after a leadoff double from fifth-year senior Andy Thomas and a single to put runners on the corners with one out by second-year freshman Kyle Nevin. A strikeout and fielder’s choice ended the BU threat.

Fifth-year senior Hayden Kettler (4-3) kept the high-octane OSU offense in check after hurling 5.1 innings, while not giving up any earned runs and striking out six. Fifth-year senior Ryan Leckich and freshman Chandler Freeman closed things out on the mound with a combined 2.2 scoreless innings.

The Bears had a chance in the ninth after fourth-year junior Davion Downey roped a two-out two-strike double to left center. Following a pinch hit walk from freshman Beau Wimpee, a strikeout sealed the game at 3-1.

Oklahoma State starter Justin Campbell (6-1) threw eight innings in the win, while reliever Zach Cable (1) earned his first save of the season.


SUNDAY - Baylor 9, Oklahoma State 3

After a five-hour rain delay, Baylor bounced back in a big way after defeating No. 21 Oklahoma State, 9-3, on Sunday night at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The Bears (30-16, 10-11 Big 12) snapped a five-game losing streak against the Cowboys (30-16-1, 12-12 Big 12) with the victory.

For the third time in the series, the Bears scored first after plating three runs in the opening frame. After two walks to open up the game, second-year freshman Tre Richardson singled through the left side to score one. Following another walk, sophomore Antonio Valdez singled to center field to score two more and give BU the 3-0 advantage.

Baylor added a run in the top of the second when fifth-year senior Andy Thomas singled to center to bring home sophomore Jack Pineda to push the BU lead to 4-0. The Cowboys had an answer in the bottom of the second after putting up a three-spot to cut it to 4-3.

True freshman Jacob Schoenvogel got things going for the Bears in the fourth with a single. Three batters later, it was Richardson again who plated Schoenvogel with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. In the fifth, two walks and a wild pitch set up runners on second and third for Schoenvogel who came through with a two-out two-RBI double. Pineda followed up with a single up the middle to make it 8-3 after five.

The Bears added an insurance run in the eighth to seal the win, 9-3.

BU starter Blake Helton was solid on the mound with 4.2 innings of work, giving up three and striking out three. True freshman Cam Caley (2-1) earned the victory in relief after hurling 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. OSU starter Bryce Osmond (2-5) was tabbed with the loss.
