WACO, Texas — Following a 4-1 win on Wednesday against the Dallas Baptist Patriots in Dallas, No. 10/20 ranked Baylor baseball boosted its record to 15-2 and tied the school’s record for best start to a season in the history of the program.

The Bears are set to head into a three-day series against unranked West Virginia University in Waco. The first game will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, the second at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, and the third at 11:05 a.m. Sunday.

This weekend’s series is the first conference play either team has encountered this season, with Baylor currently holding onto the number one spot in the Big 12 standings with a winning percentage of .882.

Last season, Baylor traveled to Morgantown for a similar series against the Mountaineers and dropped the opener with a 10-0 loss. The Bears came back the next day and won the first game of a doubleheader 8-6, but ultimately dropped the series with a 5-1 loss in the finale.

In Baylor and WVU’s all-time series the two teams are equal with six wins each. Baylor holds the edge in Waco at 5-2, including a 1-2 record in the series under second-year head coach Steve Rodriguez. Last year’s series loss was due primarily to WVU’s now graduated starting pitcher Ross Vance.

The Bears' win on Wednesday over DBU upped their mid-week game record to 5-0, and their away record to 5-1.

Baylor players to watch against WVU include senior designated hitter Matt Menard, who had three hits against Dallas Baptist on Wednesday, one of which was a home run. Menard has a six-game on-base streak and also had his fifth multi-hit second multi-RBI game of the season.

After Wednesday’s matchup, starting pitcher Alex Phillips is now tied with senior pitcher Nick Lewis for most wins (3) and tied a season high with four innings pitched. Baylor’s pitchers had 12 total strikeouts against the Patriots.

WVU currently has a winning percentage of .533 and a record of 8-7. In a road series against Old Dominion last weekend, the Mountaineers lost the first of three games 4-8, came back and won the second game 3-1, then lost again 7-1.
