How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey all,

It has been awhile since I have been to Hawaii, Maui in particular. I'm looking at surprising my fam maybe this summer with a trip there. Has anyone been recently, recommendations for hotels, etc? Kids will be 13 and 9. I'm thinking just Maui.....but maybe the Big Island a couple days as well. I'm not a big fan of Oahu. Kauai was nice but not sure a 13 and 9 yr old would enjoy it as it is more sightseeing than anything....

So hotel recommendations in Maui? Things to do? How many days do you think we need there, etc.....Think we stayed in Lahaina last time. Should we check VRBO, etc

Been a few years for me but stayed north of Lahaina. Good stuff to do. Paddle boarding, snorkeling. Not sure about surf lessons, the kids would like that. Kayaked out to whale watch.

Friend was on the big island last fall and Pearl Harbor museum was closed. Not sure if/when it would be reopened. That's about all I would want to see.

Kauai is nice, not as touristy so less people. Still have hiking, zip lining for the kids, etc. wife and I took surf lessons near Princeville. Great luau, maybe called Smith's, not too far north of the airport.

If you're able to go in the spring, the whale watching is really cool. I don't think you get that on the summer.

Been once. Stayed on Big Island (west side) and visited Oahu for one day. Great trip but don't feel the need to go back.

I went in '73 when Kilauea was erupting and lava was flowing across the road. Went back in '77 and they had turned it off. Amazing sight if you catch it at the right time.

Find out what kind of sun block you can take on a plane. The stores over there are out of everything (before Biden!)

Find out what sunblock you can use over there. They've decided the sunblocks that work kill the coral and outlawed them.

If staying on Maui, plan a day excursion to Lanai- catch shuttle boat from Lahaina. Rent jeep on Lanai to see private beaches. Or just have free Lanai shuttle drop you off at state beach- lots of dolphins. With our kids did Oahu the first time- for kids there is so much more to do there- Dole pineapple farm, water park, Pearl Harbor, drive around island for smaller beaches, luau- happy kids, happy trip. Then go back with spouse to Maui, Big Island, Kuaui or our favorite, Lanai.

I would recommend the big island if you want laid back. Volcano Nat Park is worth doing. We are even staying at the lodge next to the caldera next month.

We like Kona better the Hilo and recommend Jackie Ray's Restaurant in either. Anyway a few days in Kona is never a bad thing.

that's my 2nd fav island Only issue with Hilo is all the vog almost all the time. I always enjoy 2-3 days on the big island. Maui is my fav, then big, then Kauai…..last is Oahu.

Hilo a bit rainy and too much "old Hawaii" for me. Yes I am shallow, but on vacation, flying 4500 miles, and spending that money i want Waimea or Kona!

I learned "old Hawaii" is like "old Florida", see it once, do the history thing, head to beach.

I'm happy to help if you want a travel advisor. I have access to lower prices than you can get online, and Hawaii is one of my favorite trips to plan! I'm very familiar with the resorts, islands, excursions, etc. My email is shannon@vacationsbyshannon.com. And Baylor fans are my very best clients!
