Five years ago we were traveling to Turkey, Texas for Bob Wills Day. It was a trip we took because we love Bob Wills. Bob Wills Day was something my wife's parents loved. So it was also a way to honor them. We stopped for breakfast Saturday morning at the Herring Cafe in Vernon. It was a great breakfast food-wise, but it was also a tremendous remnder of the good life that we enjoy here. There was an easy camaraderie, a great sense of community, and you could tell how hard the people worked.

We decided that Texas was worth exploring in total and to do it we decided to visit every county seat. It took us five years. We are doing the podcast to sort of recap our journey and express what we found. We are also putting together a website-travel guide application. That is not quite ready yet but will be soon. We have two releases a week. On Thursday we drop an episode about a place in Texas. Those episodes are ten minutes long. On Sundays we do an episode about an aspect of Texas culture.

It has been more fun than we could have ever imagined. Would love it if you subscribe, share, like, comment, etc. The link above is to David's episode. This one is for the episode we released on Thursday about Waco.

That is awesome! My dad had a property tax agency business representing mostly banks and large corporations that owned property spread throughout Texas, OK and NM. One job I had in highschool in the summer was to drive to all these little bitty county courthouses to confirm property records. I don't think I've been to them all, but I have been to a LOT. More than 100 for sure.

I had some amazing times. I actually sat on the tailgate of my GMC Jimmy with John Graves and talked about the Lipan Apache. I had a county clerk in Potter County take me to shoot pronghorn in Palo Duro. I watched the sun come up at Ft. Davis, and in Jefferson County, I had my brown-bag lunch stolen from right by my leg by an alligator when I turned to get my Big Red (I let him have it!). I had my car searched by the Texas Border Patrol in Webb County, and I got out of a ticket in Coryell County because my mother sang in the choir with the court clerk's mother. Maybe the best job ever.

This week's place episode is about Jefferson in Marion County. Has to be the Bed and Breakfast capital of Texas. Great weekend getway spot. Interested to hear from East Texas Bears as to what we got right and what we missed.

If you have heard the term "Paint the town," here is a guy who did just that. Matt Tumlinson, the subject of our Sunday culture episode, started his mural career by practicing in Rankin, Texas, which is about 50 miles south of Mdiland and 40 miles north of I-10 in the middle of very little. mattt's reputation has skyrocketed since; many people know him for the "King George" mural of George Strait in San Antonio. Matt is a fascinating guy and a true Texan. Hope you enjoy.

This week's place episode is on the Capital of the Redneck Riveria, Aransas County. Have fond memories of spring break there. We had an awesome time on our most recent trip.

Got busy and did not post-but last Sunday was about Barrel Racers. Waco's own Haylin Lide was an NFR finalist in the event.

And today we travel to El Paso. Most underrated place in Texas.

El Paso

1. Is located right next to Juarez Mexico. One of the most violent cities in the world. For years separated by only the very shallow Rio Grande 'River'

2. Until President Bush installed a legitimate 63 mile long Border Wall separating the 2 cities…..El Paso suffered from a huge crime wave. Up to 200 vehicles a week were stolen snd gang activity was horrible. The Wall had brought much relief from Juarez crime….then came Biden.

3. From May 1st through Oct 30 the weather is extremely HOT. As in burn yours hands on the steering wheel hot.

3. Air pollution ( much of it coming from Juarez is horrible; year round.

4. Many of the homes closer to the border have iron bars on their doors and windows. Just for decoration of course.

5. Not a lot of first class restaurants.

6. Houses are cheaper than found many Texas cities.

7. People are generally nice.

8. El Paso routinely votes Democrat. Some precincts overwhelmingly so.

9. UTEP football has been a perennial loser for decades.

10. UTEP basketball won a national championship in the 1960's under Don Haskins.
