The dreaded Ricebirds struck fear into every 2A school along the coast, second only to the Port Lavaca Sandcrabs,

And Pecos, you should know that the only time things quieted down at Camp Harvey was when we needed silence for Harvey Roach (our house mascot) to write letters to The Lariat.

That's a pretty accurate summation. The key point would be how the stories grew ever more exaggerated with each telling, so that by the time Kevin was ready to shoot his film, there was plenty to work with for a script.

Okay it sounds like you're saying the movie was based on the exaggerated retelling of Burkett's trip, correct?

Secondly, did you, Kevin, and/or members of your pledge class also make your own Mexico trip?

I apologize for being so curious as to the details. I suppose it's the history minor in me.

Let's just say they inspired Kevin to make the movie.

There were members of our pledge class (4 guys in one car) that made a trip across the border to buy "gifts" for each member to be presented during the annual dance we held at Connally Club House (by the golf course next to the then closed Air Force Base, now TSTC). I'm sure they had hopes of coming back with wild stories of their own, but I think other than driving all that way in a weekend, I never heard any such tales.

For some reason, I seem to remember they made it back for classes the following Monday.

If they didn't get arrested on an out-of-town pledge assignment, then they weren't doing it right

Nothing worse than getting that call... Sir, we regret to inform you that your "pledge" was found urinating on our patrol vehicle outside a van rented in your name....

Simply incredible and you literally made my day by sharing this amazing picture of you with Chuck Bush.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share it with everyone!
I can't believe that he walks with a cane now. I guess there is no disputing that father time comes for us. All he eventually.
This may have been covered earlier in this thread, but is it factual that Chuck Bush was working as a security guard at the Dillards in Waco only to be randomly discovered by a shopping Kevin Reynolds?

Question....could it be remade the way he would have wanted to write it (BU instead of UT) etc. Might a 2.0 version be possible?

Not sure about the Dillard's security thing but he was the bouncer at the Bears Den. He had moved to Austin after graduating from TSTI with a degree in solar energy. I heard that is where Kevin discovered him.

He also, according to him, was an offensive lineman at LSU and suffered a back/neck injury that ended his football career. I don't know if that is true but he had me convinced.

Actually, left to right, that is actress Elizabeth Daily who plays "Jailbate Judy " Chuck Bush who plays "Doorman" and the actor now Houston Chiropractor Brian Cesar who plays "Lester" aka "call me sometime Arthur Anderson Dallas" and Marvin McIntyre who plays Truman Sparks. Also attending the 40th anniversary Ultimate Fandango was the actual stunt pilot and several filming crew. Director Kevin Reynolds (son of Baylor President Herb filmed a greeting tribute to the fans. We visited the key filming locations. Want to see more? visit the Ultimate Fandango facebook page.

As Chuck tells the story… he was walking into a 7-11 when Kevin Reynolds saw him and approached him. Yes, he was working as a security guard at the time. This chance encounter changed his life and he now works on all sorts of documentaries and screen plays. Chuck is a wonderful person and friend.

Wharton Tigers vs the El Campo Ricebirds was a rivalry I played in from 7th grade through senior year. The fine folks of El Campo were always a bit jealous that Wharton was the county seat! If I recall correctly, this great rivalry that has been played for over 100 years!
