All right people this is a wake-up call for all of you.

Up until 45 I had no health issues. in fact people said I looked younger than my actual age. Since 45, I've had one bad old-age illness after another and I've been hospitalized multiple times for each new one that presents itself. The latest one is heart failure which is normally not seen until someone in their seventies. The heart and respiratory is mostly all caused by sleep apnea . I haven't been perfect in my lifestyle choices but I have not been excessive or terrible in them either.I made the changes in my life that needs to be made and still ran into this so....

So I'm telling everyone to go get a sleep study if anyone has ever told you that you snore so you will not have happen to what happened to me.

Yes

People also avoid things such as prostate & colon screening - those killers can be overcome or prevented with early detection

good luck to you 84

Well, you've been Not 53 for 435 days. It's amazing you're still alive and lucid.

You might consider increasing your sardine intake.

Can't hurt

I don't think I've ever used the word "ager".

So, what's the treatment -- a CPAP machine, or one of the other options?

I bought a device on Amazon for about $23 that minimizes the snoring, but I don't think I stopped breathing before. I don't know if it would be effective for a serious case of sleep apnea.

I've slept with a cpap and have not snored in 15 years. It works. My heart is very healthy and I'm approaching 70. Probably saved my life. It has surely extended it.

Welp, it looks like BU84BEAR didn't make it to 436.

I wonder if he has any sardines left. I'd hate to see them go to waste, so I'll take them off his (cold, dead) hands.

Well my heart was strong 5 years ago when all the tests were done. Now I have .heart failure seen only in old people. I can't answer your questions SMack because I am trying to figure ig out myself.

I have a bipap machine, but most people get cpap machine. The one at home is better fitted than the one I had on at the hospital

I just learned what a BIPAP machine is, and it looks like it's a better option than the CPAP.

Glad to see you made it to 436.

Glad to see you getting this treated. My wife's apnea was so bad the doc said she put her life at risk every time she went to sleep.

She had a Bipap for the first several years, then went with a cpap.

I went a very long stretch with zero exercise and a few months ago started back with treadmill. I was amazed at how bad my endurance was when I starter. Flash forward - my body has responded rapidly and pleased at how fast I could recover what was lost. Not what anyone would call a runner, but I can now get several miles and up to an hour of cardio no problem. I don't go with great intensity, but I go.

Maybe not apples to apples, but things can change for the better.

I also started CPAP about a year ago. It allows for better sleep which gives you more energy which leads to exercise. Everything is connected - just have to be moving in the right direction

I'm thinking of switching to filtered cigarettes for the health benefits. Also, I've heard that meth increases your heart rate, so that's kind of like exercise, no?

I have had a cpap for a year, and I just end up tanking it off after a few minutes because I feel like I can't breathe. Anyone feel that way and learned a method to overcome that?

There a lot of apnea forums better for this you can look at.

Just list all the potential problems and check them off. Big one for me was the minimum pressure was too low with that problem. I also have allergies and can't miss a day of antihistamine or nasacort

Found out I had bad sleep apnea many years ago. At that time they only had the bulky CPAPs - nearly impossible to sleep in. Craig Schwimmer in Dallas did the sleep apnea surgery. Absolutely butchered me. I have a massive hole at the back of my throat. Took me years to re-learn how to stop food from coming out of my nose. Cant sleep but on one side as the throat wont close.

To top it off, the sleep apnea is still there.

Settings may be wrong, or you may not be close enough to sleep before you put it on. Talk to a good cpap rep.

Thanks. Just forced myself to not take it off the last couple of nights and now love it again.

Were you exercising on a regular basis when the sleep apnea started? Also, would you consider yourself overweight or were you overweight when the "old-age illnesses" started? Just curious. Thanks.

CPAP machine saved my life. If your choice is dying or wearing the CPAP to get sleep, I didn't think I had a choice. I have used it for 15 years. I lost a 150 pounds, kept off 100, so life has been better. I am evangelistic about sleep studies and sleep apnea. Just do it, friends!

Dilly dilly. I have had a CPAP for the last 15 years too. I will not even nap without it.

If my wife wants to get me out of bed, she turns off my CPAP. It feels like the life is being sucked out of you.

I went through the sleep test and failed badly. I never went to sleep the entire night. They had so damned many wires attached I couldn't sleep.

Doc ordered a cpap machine last Oct and I'm still trying to get use to it but I wear it every night.

My biggest complaint is the full mask leaks when I toss and turn and it sounds like farting.

After two and one half months I can't say I feel any better but I do take fewer and fewer naps so the machine must be doing its thing. I have 85% blockage due to a deviated septum so that caused breathing problems when sleeping.
BU84BEAR
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Get them to fit you with a better mask. Also, the better machines computer adjust to your breathing pressure and pattern. Tell your doctor that unless you get these upgrades you arent getting the benefit anyway.

The machine at home is so much more tolerable than the one at the hospital. The nose and mouth mask fits with little oressure, and no leaks...and after the first night the "pressure" or forced air adjusted to match my breathing so I didnt feel trapped.

The mask they gave me is also very easy to adjust or remove in the middle of the night to get a sip of water or use the restroom.
Stranger

I started out, years ago, with the full mask. About 12 years I went to a mask that goes under the nose and is not nearly as intrusive.
It is not uncomfortable and stays on all night.

If you have to adjust a while it's worth it. It'll save your life.

I've used a cpap for over 9 years now. I have to get a cpap compliance report every year to keep my job so I had to change machines 2 years ago because my old machine couldn't be monitored for compliance.

Now my wife says I've started snoring again with the machine on even though it's set on the highest pressure available. Never happened with my old machine. Sleep doc says I need a full face mask now. Oak wrap.

Used a bipap in the hospital when I had the bypass. Hated it.

BU84BEAR,

In addition to a CPAP/BIPAP, you should consume lots of sardines and engage in creepy yoga.

Follow this advice, and you'll be sure to make it to the Comet party in good health. Unfortunately, you probably won't have any friends.
