Saw that. Thought it was excellent. Just saw The Disaster Artist the other day and I highly recommend it

I left the theater scratching my head as to why Disaster Artist was made and feeling kind of cruel for watching it. It seems like the world is laughing at a man with an undiagnosed brain injury or mental illness.

My favorites of the year were Baby Driver and Dunkirk. I also liked Darkest Hour.

I didn't get that impression. I'd recommend reading the book too though. Provides a lot more detail. Loved Dunkirk. Haven't seen Baby Driver yet but I've heard good things .

I liked "Three Billboards" a lot -- intriguing story and tremendous performances.

One movie that my mind keeps coming back to is "Loving Vincent" about Van Gogh. There have been other films about his life, notably the one with Kirk Douglas. But one reason I liked this one is because it presented a new interpretation about Van Gogh's death: the evidence strongly suggests that he did not commit suicide but was shot, semi-accidentally, by some rich, spoiled teenagers who teased and bullied the artist and had been playing around with a gun. People have talked about the novel technique used in this film; every cel was hand-painted to look like Van Gogh's style, and most of the scenes and characters come straight out of his paintings. So it might be easy to dismiss this as a visual gimmick. Even if that's true, it's worth seeing for the gimmick alone, but I think it's no mere gimmick. You're seeing the world as he saw it and expressed it, and it helps you get a little more insight into a mind that was brilliant, beautiful and troubled.

The Shape of Water is getting a lot of buzz. (have not seen yet)

It is made by Guillermo del Toro who made maybe my favorite movie of the last 20 year Pan's Labyrinth.

His more commercial movies are Hellboy & Pacific Rim. Devil's Backbone is great too.

Haven't seen it yet, either, but there is definitely a lot of positive buzz. I thought Pan's Labyrinth was terrific.

Shape of Water is some beautiful filmmaking. The story and cinematography have a feel of old school romanticism. I definitely liked it, just not up there as one of my year's very favorites.

2017 was an odd movie year. There are three movies coming out 1/12 I want to see that appear to be more intriguing then 90% of what came out in 2017.

The Post. Way interested.

Anyone seen The Florida Project? That's another movie from 2017 that I found has stuck with me.

This is on my short list of movies left to see from 2017. Have heard it's really well done.

It was. The child actress was great, and it's the best role Willem Dafoe has had since maybe Platoon.

Dunkirk fell short of my expectations. That may not be fair because I love Christopher Nolan and my expectations were sky high.

I rewatched John Wick 2. Great cinematography. Best writing and acting that I have seen in years.

I really enjoyed Dunkirk, but I can definitely see thinking it did not live up to the hype.

I think Nolan wanted to both tell the story of Dunkirk and also tell it in an interesting and different way. I read at one point he considered making it without any script and still kept the dialogue really low. Movies that are made to specific whims of the director often don't hit all the buttons.

I see it as a "Best Cinematography" type of film at the Oscars.

Some really good movies this Christmas season:

The Man Who Invented Christmas -- very good movie about Dickens' inspiration for the Christmas Carol

Wonder -- a little saccharine, but a good story -- somewhat damaged by a cliche ending

Greatest Showman -- fun musical, Hugh Jackman is fabulous as Barnum

Darkest Hour -- Gary Oldman is great as Churchill. Movie title is pretty accurate--it literally covers the darkest few days of Churchill's leadership

Wonder - hands down.

Really puts in perspective how we should treat us and others.

Jumanji. It won't win any awards, but if you're looking for a fun night at the movies, check it out. It was the most enjoyable movie I've seen in quite some time.
